Default Wrls G speed

Okay i'll admit it i'm not that smart when it comes to networking flat out i kinda suck at it. Well i have a Wrls G setup at home and I have a 3m DSL line plug it into my modem by ethernet i get 2.5M speed.

okay thats good and fine now when i do my speed test on numerous websites on my wrls connection i can only get 1.6M well at first maybe this is a problem with my modem/router combo so i run over to my brothers. He has the same brand modem as me same model and happens to have a 7M dsl line. Okay i plug it in ethernet i get over 5M speed on test sites thats okay they're not accurate. Well i plug in through wrls G (I'm only 5 feet from the wrls router no other networks in range) i only get 1.6M once again.

Now that makes little sense to me since wrls G is supposed to be 54mbs and ehternet is 100mbs. I should be able to get transmission speeds of at least 3m wrls... anyways yeah i'm confused can a network guru help?

same speed site both broadbandreports.com and my provders. and not to far away... 5 feet. The modem reads that its getting the full speed, as well as everything there. Just couldn't figure out why in the world at 5 feet away with a modem that has dual internal antennas (one transmit one recieve) is having those kinds of problems. I know its not my laptop or desktop since one has built in wrls the other is a PCI lynksis G card. I don't know i'm lost.
