Default How to "Google" search and get the results you want!

Having made friends with "ComputerKing" recently has been a bit frustrating for me, and I know he has drivin allot of you nuts here in the past...

This adds up to frustration for him and others trying to help him.

Not only is he very young, but he has a language and culture barriers to overcome...I admire him for sticking with it and not giving up

Hopefully you have been able to see some improvements in his behavior, though I know he still has more to go.

So, the lesson I have relearned from this experience is based on the old saying of:

"Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach him to fish.. and he eats for a lifetime"

Well, recently allot of my threads lately have involved making my life easier at Apex by writing on a topic from a beginner/novice point of view..I only have to write it once then, and can simply refer newer or inexperienced members back to it later..allowing me to devote my time to other areas of innovation and "Unique" problem solving.

I did not do this to be lazy, it's more about effeciency..having to answer the same questions with slightly new twists is not productive...so I have decided to tackle this problem by teaching people to "Fish"

I read an excellent article on this subject recently that even taught me a few new things on it, and I would like to pass it on to others.

Quote:
Rule #1. The characteristics (i.e., the individual words, terms or phrases) that you use to describe your dream job are called “key words” on the Internet. They are normally entered in all lower case letters because capitalization makes them case sensitive. In other words, if you capitalize a key word, the computer will identify only those jobs where that word is capitalized. If you use all lower case letters, the computer will identify every job that contains the word, whether it is capitalized or not.

Rule #2. To link two characteristics together, both of which are required in your dream job, use the Boolean operator “AND.” Boolean operators are normally expressed in all capital letters. In the example above, you might use the following expression to tell the computer what kind of job you want: $50,000 AND hospitality. This expression tells the computer that you want it to identify any job in its database that offers both characteristics. It must pay $50,000, and it must be in the hospitality industry. If either one of those factors is missing, you do not want to see the job.

Rule #3. To tell the computer that the characteristic for which you are looking is a phrase rather than a single word, use quotation marks. For example: "facility manager" AND $50,000 AND hospitality.

Rule #4. To link two characteristics together, either one of which is acceptable in your dream job, use the Boolean operator “OR.” For example, Milwaukee OR "Green Bay". Note that using capital letters with city or state names is acceptable as they are seldom expressed any other way.

Rule #5. To link two characteristics together when they are part of a longer set of characteristics, use parentheses. For example, "facility manager" AND $50,000 AND hospitality AND (Milwaukee OR "Green Bay").
Rule #6. To account for the fact that different people use different terms to express the same idea, always include any synonyms of your characteristics and, wherever possible, use a Boolean operator called a wild-card.
  • To identify other terms that employers might use to describe the characteristics you seek in a job, review the vocabulary in their print Employment ads. For example, you may find that some employers use the term Property Manager synonymously with Facility Manager. Hence, you should instruct the computer as follows: ("facility manager" OR "property manager") AND $50,000 AND hospitality AND (Milwaukee OR "Green Bay").
  • Sometimes the variability in expression is simply a derivative of the same word. For example, an employer might use the term "facility management" to describe the "facility manager" job for which you're looking. The wild-card enables you to tell the computer to look for any and all terms that are based on the same root word. Hence, the term "facility manage*" (the asterisk is the wildcat) would tell the computer to find any job with a characteristic that is expressed as a derivative of the root word, manage.
Using Boolean expressions is a little like learning to speak pig Latin. It’s not an elegant way to communicate, but it can convey information so that it is accurate and comprehensible. Equally as important, anyone can do it, and with even a little practice, become expert enough to find their dream job and make it visible on the Web

Normally I would just link this, but links have a habit of getting broken over time, and this info needs to be preserved for future refference...below is the original article.

Any more tips or links people can post here will be most appreciated!

Now go eat some fish!

EDIT: I was a bit tired when I posted this and missed a typo in the thread title, could a Mod/Admin please correct this for me?

dont forget with google you can search within a specific site by using "site:" without the quotations

EX. site:www.pcapex.com power supply review

you can also add quotes around a term

EX. site:www.pcapex.com "power supply" review

that way only pages with power supply in that exact order will show up not just pages that include the words power and supply

For those who cannot stand IE(myself included), there is Spellbound for Firefox.
