| Apex Advanced Techie | If you could, it'd be great since i'll be needing them soon. apparently, my parents have decided that a 20' fishing boat is more important than cable, so as a result, methinks they'll be cancelling optimum soon. Any ideas/ways/tricks that I could get a 56k modem to go a lot faster (i.e. decent ping in CS, bearable web surfing, etc.), like OCing a modem or using two modems at once (dunno if these are accurate, i've just heard rumors)? It would be immensely appreciated if you guys could. ![]() Thanks, Nutsack |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I know at one point Diamond Multimedia was building a modem that would "shotgun" - run 112k over two phone lines. But you needed two phone lines AND an ISP that would support shotgun. For a very short time period, it was cost-effective. Then DSL and cable came down in price another notch and it wasn't. Sucks to be you my brother. I would give up a meal a day before my DSL line. EDIT Type "diamond multimedia shotgun" in Google and read. Some interesting tech. stuff on shotgun-ning modems. No way around the two phone lines best I can tell but it appears ANY two recent vintage modems can handle it. EDIT -MF Last edited by Monsignor Funkibut; 29-January-05 at 12:21 PM. Reason: Googly |

| Apex Advanced Techie | Alright, never mind then. I might as well just shell out for one of those mini-DSL lines (128k upload, <1m down) from SBC. On an unrelated note, what kind of pings can I expect on most online games with 56k? by most i mean CS:S, UT2K4, BF1924/BFV, RTCW:ET, blabbity blah. From those with firsthand experience, is it really possible to game online with such maximal pingage? |

expect 200-300ping I played regular cs for about a year before I had broadband and I can say that it makes a WHOLE lot of difference (+ tons of people complain about you when your ping is high ) You may be able to get your skill level to a certain level but at some point it will just be "too hard" because of your ping to be any better. But personally I wouldn't get broadband if it were ONLY for gaming.

| Apex Tech Demi-God | ISPs usually offer a service that willl load web-pages faster. They use a compression technique...kinda of like how ZIP file compresses data. The ISP will have software stored on one of their servers and will also have the client install the software on their end. Since the data is compressed, more information is able to be sent with in the same period of time. The bad thing about this technique is that it doesn't help the download speed of multimedia any and you lose some quality of the images. I bet your parents will keep the high speed internet access. Once you get it you can't stand to go back. |
