Default Network help needed

I have my cable modem plugged into a computer (Azul) via USB. The printer is also hooked up to that PC (Azul) via USB. A long cat5 runs from that, to my wireless Netgear MR814 V2 router, as the WAN. The computer (Azul) shares the internet via Windows XP’s internet connection sharing, so it must have 128.168.0.1 as the IP. This prevents me from just plugging that system (Azul) into the router into a regular port and then sharing the internet that way. All the other computers are plugged into, or use wireless to the router. This was I have internet on all computers, and can access every computer plugged normally into the router. However, I cannot access the PC (Azul) that has the printer via VNC, nor is that computer (Azul)recognized on the network. All systems are set up on WorkGroup. The router and that computer connected to the printer and internet (Azul) both need 128.168.0.1 as the IP. I need some way to be able to connect to that computer (Azul), or at least the printer on that computer. Anyone have any ideas? Could I assign the printer a seperate IP or something and use port forwarding?

Take Azul out of the WAN port and put it into one of the other ports.

DOn't use Internet Sharing. Plug your cable modem into your router and install a PPPOE connection on each computer.

It won't share the internet then. The router is 128.168.0.1 and Windows XP's ICS requires that machine (Azul) to also be 128.168.0.1.

it would be easier to plug all the computers into the router and then plug the printer into a computer and then share it and then make sure that all of the computers are set to MSHOME or workgroup or whatever you prefer! thats just my 0.02 but it seems the most logical thing to do!

Modem- router- CAT 5 to all PC's and then setup the printer on one PC and then share it!

The modem, printer, and Azul are on one end of my house, while my computers and the router are in my room, on the opposite end. I already have a cat5 cable running across the house.

The modem has to be on that computer via ICS or I'd need 2 cat5's running through the house. I managed to get 1 running through the house by hidding it under my mom's carpet runners. Would I just be better off running cat5 from the modem to the router and making that PC wireless?

that's what I would do...either that or run another cat5 (which sounds like it would be a bad idea

spectrum: use the existing cat5 cable, cut the ends off of both ends and splice back about 4 inches of the protecting plastic..pick 4 wires and pull them to the left, then pull the other 4 wires to the right..do the same on the other end of the cat5 cable, making sure to replicate the colors...get an rj45 connector and put the 4 wires on the left into pins 1,2,3, and 6 (looking down on the gold conductors of the rj45 connector, from left to right)..do the same with the wires on the right...duplicate this exactly on the other end...now you have two cat5 cables from one...plug the modem into the WAN port of the router, then plug the other cable in to the LAN and back into the PC...i'll bust out my paint skills in a bit to show you...

Woah, 2 cat5's from one cable? Now that is uber cool! I can do that, buy a wireless adapter for the PC, or email my files to myself, open them on Azul and print.

you'll want the two cables so that the modem goes into the router, then the router hands out DHCP address to all the PC's, then you all can share files as you please behind the router...

Just a quick question . . . Do you have any firewall software running on this setup at all? (just trying to put all the pieces into one pile to look at it more neatly is all)

no, cat5 only uses those 4 pins, even for duplexing..you will still maintain the speed, but you may have crosstalk with longer cables and intensive data transfer, so this is not to be used in a business or commercial application, but is dandy for the home user who does not want to have to run a second cable, or is too far for wireless...

An even easier solution would be to pickup either a hub or switch for cheap and put the hub in place of the router and move the router from where it is now to your computer with the cable modem.

Plug the cable modem, printer, and computer directly into the router and the cable running accrossed the house should plug into the router on the side of the cable modem and out to the hub on the other side of the house which the other 3 computers plug directly into.

Thats what I would do...

I had my setup exactly like that, but the hub and router combo has some weird DNS issues that really slowed my browsing down.

It shouldn't cause any issues really. I ran a similar setup for years. You may want to try a cheap switch. Dell has some pretty cheap ones you can order.

So what if you just move the cable modem and the router. Set it up like this. No need for new ends to be crimped and you dont need to buy new hardware.

light green = modem
yellow = router
red = 1337 boxes
dark green = printer
