Use a straight thru cable to go from your computer's ethernet connection to the router and a straight thru cable to connect the router to your broadband modem.

if its anything like most home routers click here: http://192.168.1.1 and if that dosen't work click here http://192.168.0.1 - if it asks for a login and password, there is no login and the password is 'admin'. Once inside change the connection settings to use PPoE and type in your username and password. To be easy on you, make sure DHCP is enabled on the router and then set the ethernet card on your computer to assign its addresses using DHCP.

If you need a crossover cable, why do you need a ISO for a setup file? You can download router setup files online and cat5 crossover adapters are like $4.

ISO files will change the "OS" of the router. You need a cable; hardware, not software. Your router physicaly NEEDS to have a cross-over cable. The difference between cat5 cabling is the wiring sequence. A change in the sequence changes the way data is transmitted.

Just get the cable. PPPOE is a user-friendly/dumbed down version of networking. It should be as easy as connecting the right cable.

you can also try making your own. i just bought 300 ft of networking cable so i'm making my own now. it was only $25 for the 300 ft of cable, rj-45 plugs, and a rj-45 crimper/cable cutter/ wire stripper.

What model # is your router?
Almost anything reasonably current should handle MDI/MDIX (built-in automatic crossover)
And in most cases the modem to WAN port on the router uses a standard cable (I think your ISP tech is wrong!) you would need to enter the router config screen to set it for PPPoE (uses a smaller packet size) no software change is needed.
