Default XP networking Problems

Once again Windows XP has stumped me with another of its tricks.

So here's the situation. I am renting out a room in my house as an office for a friend of mine who runs a record label. He just bought a new computer and wanted XP on it. So last night I installed it for him. Now the trouble is, that somehow after a fresh start, the LAN connection isnt working. The Status says that it is connected and the clock counts as if it were connected, but absolutely no packets are being sent or received. If anyone can help it would be much appriciated.

Thanks. Fid.

make sure that you are using the right kind of cable, are you using a crossover or a straight through?

also check to see if you have any driver isues! and check to see if anything is disabled,.....

Jesus, that was fast, I leave the house to grab a bite and i come back and there are 3 replies, good work.

and to cover everything there.

-TCP/IP is installed.....as are the rest
-My cable is fine, ive plugged it into another computer and it works
-The computer is connecting to the network through a hub that 2 other computers in my network also use
-The computer seems to think the drivers are fine...I reinstalled them just to be safe and still no dice

If anyone has any further ideas of what could be the problem please let me know

Windows also seems to have problems while assigning IP addresses to the machine

Sounds like you just need to manually enter the IP address and such as its not DHCPing correctly - I have this trouble occasionally with built-in NIC on cheapy motherboards........

if i do indeed need to manualy assign IP addresses could someone give me instructions on how to do so. Its been a while sense ive done any of this, i need some refreshing.

Thanks. Fid.

196.x.x.x or 169.x.x.x...if it is the later of the two, then there is your problem, you are not receiving an IP from the router..

Alright, so yes that was a typo the IP is 169.

I ran the computer directly to the modem and now the computer is sending packets but not receiving...so a step in the right direction i supose.

What needs to be done about my router not assigning my computer its own IP address. How do i go about manualy assigning the IP.

Ok, tried that and nothing changed?, I tried doing it both ways, directly connected to modem as well as connected to hub and the IPs did not change. Thank you for your patience and all of your help.

Anything else I could try?

are you sure the NIC works? to test, in CMD type, ping 127.0.0.1

looks to me like you should try another NIC somtimes they dont work with a certain hub.
i know u said u get an ip but ive had mine go funky and it didnt work when i tried above.

Alright so it is seeming pretty damn hopeless here, Zer0s has been an amazing amout of help both on and off forums and still I am having no luck. I have tried all of the above. I went as far as reinstalling windows, and also taking a NIC out of my other computer and trying it in this one and I am still unable to receive packets. If anyone has ANY OTHER IDEAS what so ever, please help me out. Nothing seems to be working.

Thanks. Fid.
