Exclamation I've been hacked!!!!

Anybody know how to close open ports and deny access without approval. I found a freeware app that lets you see what ports are active, but I'm not sure how to block them. The hack either came through because of bearshare or because of Yahoo messenger. I uninstalled both and reformatted my computer. Now, I want more security. I'm open to all suggestions.

ZoneAlarm would be one v. good program.

Also, is this a shared internet connection? If so, you can close all open ports through your router.

Little more information would be helpful.

IF you don't have hardware firewall , try an appilcation firewall such as Kerio/Tiny personal firewall.

I share the connection with my wife's pc. We're using a motorola router that claimed to have some firewall features, but they got in and tampered with Norton Antivirus.

Ok ok.... First of all who is "they"? Do you mean an actual person hacked into your machine and messed with Norton or do you have a virus thats making Norton go crazy?

Norton had the word "Tampered" plastered all over it. I received no virus warnings. Only general security alerts that Norton was being tampered with.

Default A couple of reference links:

A couple of places to start are below. You should make sure you're running windows update every wednesday (Microsoft releases security updates on tuesday), check your anti-virus at least weekly, and I suggest not using file sharing programs (these are very bad things - read the license agreement to these one day, horrifing from a legal perspective, and that's before you even begin to audit the code.)

I use a combo of a linksys router and Sygate (free firewall).

For file sharing proggies I forward the ports needed to my specific machine, and for the most part I am completly stealthed to all scans. I got a little uptight after a recent barage of scans.

(For the most part being that I sometimes filter ident, port 113, and sometimes I don't. Damn webpages load to slow)
