Default Help! Wireless in my dorm

Ok, here's the situation gentlemen...

I have a Linksys router in my dorm room, and I can't get the damn thing to connect. When I connect the ethernet cord from the wall port, and then connect the router to my computer, the lights signifying an internet connection blinks correctly, as does PC status. However, my computer refuses to connect to the internet. When I go back to a regular hardline hookup, no problem. I'm assuming I need to assign my router an IP address, as each port is given it's address. Any idea how to resolve this?

(thanks in advance, and sorry if i botched the explanation!)

Did you have to register with your schools network to gain access before you put the router in? If so, it might be the case that you're registered with your computer's network card's MAC address and you need that switched over to your router's MAC address.

uc davis allowed multiple registrations for nics and routers. if your school's system is the same, then you need to find the physical address of your router.

Essentially, all I had to do was change my IP settings to the ones listed above the port in my room. So obviously, IPs aren't given automatically. My assumption is that perhaps I have to give my router that IP address for the network to let me get on.

I haven't tried registering it with my campus, as the Tech people say they don't support wireless routers. However, they said if I set it up on my own, that's alright.

I agree, sounds like that may just do the trick. But if that doesn't work, let us know and we can try some other suggestions.

Good luck!

My question in that regard is how should I do that? I can't use the CD for the automatic installation of the router, as it tells me no network connection is detected. Is there a way to send the router a command so that I can manually modify the IP address?

Go to internet explorer and type 192.168.1.1 into the bar and it should prompt you with a login for the linksys router, then login using "admin" and "admin" for the login name and password once you in you can change the IP address.

I just tried that, and IE just sending me an "Action Cancelled/No Page to Display" error. I tried launching it through the run command as well, but still nothing.

First I tried it with the cord running from the router's internet jack to my jack on my computer, and when that didn't work I tried from the computer 1 jack on the router.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks again for all your efforts guys, it's greatly appreciated.

Sure it's not 192.168.0.1?
