| ...still just a dream. Oh, great and powerful God of Broadband, Why dost thou mock me so? Ok, Comcast was supposed to be installing cable for me today. Tech comes out, connects everything.... no link. So he checks all the lines and everything passes. No detectable interference and the signal is strong. Tries a different cable modem.... tries a different coax line inside the apt.... tries a third modem... I sacrifice a chicken (okay, really just made a grilled chicken breast sandwich) in honor of the Broadband God. The tech took the cable modem out to the junction box and it connected right away. Well, next month they're going to come out and rewire the cable from my apt to the junction box. Oh, and one of my neighbors just got cable.... no problems for him! Bastard! Okay, so now the point, they've got my account all setup. They're not gonna charge me anything until after the rewire though... even if I do manage an intermittent connection. This is more rant than anything, but if anyone has any ideas on how to get the cable modem to connect before the rewire next month I'm all ears! | ||

| Well, if your modem is able to sync up from inside your apartment, then you have a good connection. I had problems at first getting my account set up, so I just used a seperate browser to create an account..but my modem sync'd up with no problem. I dumped SBC two months ago and got Comcast cable..I'll never go back | ||

| Nope... the modem does not sync with the server... unless I take it out to the junction box, but that'd take way to many extension cords to move my whole computer desk out there. ![]() Yup one of our new neighbor was the first to get it in the neighborhood. They finally upgraded whatever was keeping them from offing it in our area. I guess now they've just gotta deal with old cables running into everyone's homes. I figured we'd be fine since we had digital cable a while ago... guess that's not as picky. At least they're not charging us for it. | ||

| If you know your neighbor, I'd tell them of your prediciment and offer to set them up a wireless network with them knowing you'll be on it. I get 3MB down so unless your neighbor is a broadband hog you shouldn't have any problems. Even though you have digital cable, they have to upgrade the nodes and put new boxes in the area. They had to do that to our town, the cable box is outside my apartment so I was wondering what was happening when the changed it out. | ||

Yeah, I got that... sorry i forgot to include my response. I don't really know the neighbor. besides I don't have the $$$ for wireless hubs to go around and this building would probably kill any signal... kills my cell.

Coax is cheaper than cat5, plus no one'll steal your modem. But yeah, that was gonna be my suggestion, hook it up straight to the box out the window or something.

| Well, I'd be sorely tempted to run the co-ax myself temporarily, but the box is on the other side of the building and there's a few feet of lawn between it and the building.... I don't think it'd like the lawn mower and I'm not about to try to bury it after majorly screwing up my arm this weekend (though it sure did impress my doctor). | ||

If you just need to temporarily bury the cable just to avoid the lawn mower, you dont need to dig much, if you have an edger avalible you can just run a line with that and stick the cable down in the cut.

| well how long before they do the rewire? if its 3 months like charter, comcast, verizon, etc... then look for alternate methods. Method #1 See if you can cancel the cable and go DSL Method #2 Create a phoneline network between you and your neighbor if its reasonable, my friend did that with his neighbor, though i have no clue how he did it. they do live in an apartment next to each other so maybe they were on the same line or something like that. if your neighbor isnt a hog you guys could possibly cut the cost between you guys and share the connection. Good Luck all in all, see if you can wait it out | ||

| WOOOOHOOOO!!!!!! Up and running! Average transfers at around 425K/sec.... is that good? Who cares? It flat out kills dialup! Now I just need a friggin' router... wife and I can't be on at the same time and there goes our file sharing. I've installed an old NIC for the time being... it'll do... for now. Damn! I'm loving this!!!! | ||
