Default wired/wireless router problems

Compusa had quite a nice deal going on...for 20 bucks after rebate, you got a wireless router and a wireless pcmcia card. I went ahead and ordered it, got it yesterday, and the router has been giving me fits all day.

The problem is, I now have two routers, a belkin wired router, and a dlink wireless router. I have tried lots of combinations of turning on and off the DHCP server on either router, and only having one. They are both of the same subnet, assigning IP's to two seperate 100 number IP ranges. I want a wired and wireless network, but require the ports on both for it to function correctly.

Any ideas? ...did you actually understand my question? ...:S

I think I understood your question. But from what I understand what you want to do probably isnt going to work. Why not just use your wireless router. It should have come with normal 10/100 Lan ports on the back of it.

Okay, I'd tried that once before, and I couldn't connect to my internet, but completely forgot about having to re-register with a new mac address because it was a different "network device" or computer. So, that works now, I'm getting DHCP from the wireless.

Now, I connect with a wireless card to the network, and I can't renew the card's IP...that's what it says when I repair the connection, anyhow. The signal strength is excellent, too.

Ideas?

Dude, can you draw this out for us?
Are you wanting two seperate networks (ie: a wired network and a seperate wireless network)???

If so, the modem will need to be a DHCP server if at all possible, then a layer 2 device will have to be between the modem and routers..this layer 2 device (switch) will have to allow for segmentation (VLANs) so that the routers do not talk to each other, but can still obtain packets from the modem..

I would turn off the routing functions off of the belkin and have it act like a switch.

Happycamper, have you enabled wep or any sort of wireless encryption scheme? If so, triple check to make sure you have it input correctly.

Instead of turning off the belkin, can I turn off the dlink and just make it a wireless access point/switch?

Basically what your trying to do is use two routers on the same net connection and I dont think that is going to work.

You might consider trying to trade that dlink router/wifi combo in for a wireless access point.

It can work. I've done this with two Linksys routers. Since he has a belkin, it may be a different story.
