Default Traffic Shaping

Anyone know about traffic shaping? I read that some people have it and some don't. I did a test and I don't believe I have it from my provider since my downstream/upstream were not very stable. I read there were software ways of traffing shaping, can someone show me how to do that?

You know how your internet is capped? And when you hit a certain point in your dl / ul your speed will go down for about a second and then hit the cap again etc.. Shaping is soppose to keep it so its stable. From what I have read at least.

Sounds like someone's been blowing smoke up your skirt, because from what I know of how TCP/IP works, you can't prevent that from happening. Please don't make me get into it now.

If I'm wrong, however, I'd definitely be interested in reading up on it...

2800-3000 downstream / 200 - 230 upstream during good times

For the past month after 8:30 - 9:00PM it's been really laggy, especially for gaming. I would get from 30-200 ping lag spikes. I called comcast and the person I spoke to said that there has been a recent "influx" of new customers which have been put on my "line" (not line but i dont know what it is called , whatever it is I dont remember word you get the idea =) ) And he said comcast knows hteres been a problem and it should be fixed within a week.

Are you on cable or DSL ?
If it's cable well then, you have faster speeds than DSL but, when your neighbors start getting to then you 're going to share the line and you all drop.
Kinda like hogs at feeding time, they all want it for themselves. OINK OINK.

EDIT: Just read yuo have Comcast, Comcast is cable. Sorry to hear about your loss.

We call it a hub... One thing that might help is that they can put an amplifier on your line to keep the signal stronger when you hit peak times... Or have a sep line run for internet so your not sharing cable and internet on one line if you dont have it that way already.

Dude, I have Earthlink DSL and it sucks. Two people can't even use the same connection in my house. Whenever someone gets on while I'm playing CS, my ping spikes to 300. I was thinking of getting cable, but now that I know cable isn't that good in our area, I just might not...

are you using a router that allows QoS (quality of service)? If so, assign the port that CS is using the highest priority, and it will let those packets out first, no matter the load..

I used to have earthlink dsl. They were good until until they capped my internet to 768/128 instead of the 1500/128 that I was paying for. Switched over to comcast and haven't had as many problems as I've had with Earthlink.

Heres some things I've found on traffic shaping.

http://fury.rupture.net/shaping/

http://www.broadbandreports.com/foru...3874~mode=flat

And with this program I can keep my downloads at an average of 400kb/s instead of it jumping from 300- 440kb/s

Got a link or a how-to? I'm a total noob at networking. I've got a Linksys BEFW1154 v.2.
What port does CS use and how do I change router settings?
