| Ok, so here's the deal...I use pop-up stopper pro on my computer in conjunction with IE6 my problem is that IE won't let me select Pop-up stopper as one of the toolbars. in fact it won't let me change any of my toolbar settings, they're all greyed out. I have no idea what to do to get this to work and any help would be greatly appreciated. Latency | ||

Actually now that I look at it i think that's the same program I use now. But you know how when you open IE it doesn't block anything unless it is "running" in the toolbar. my problem is after I install it it doesn't "run" in the toolbars at the top of IE and I can't select it in the toolbar options.

| this one, on IE6 under Win 98 OS, works in the taskbar, nothing to do with my toolbars, unless that is an option.. I haven't messed with the options since I set it up, I rather like the way it runs so I haven't messed with it. [edit] sorry, systray, near the clock, not the taskbar. [/edit] | ||

Oh, the sexual innuendo jokes that I could make with that statement.... ![]() Anyway, welcome to PR Latency. You were looking at the problem the entire time and yet you didn't see it. Don't worry, it's a common mistake that a lot of people make. Remember that software install disc you got from Sympatico? Just pop this in your CD-Rom and it'll hook you up? Well, that's exactly what it did. A lot of access companies will typically pull a trick like this. Had it happen with AT&T and a few others. What happens is that it will modify your IE registry settings to reflect their preferences. For example, the first time you started it up, you went directly to their home page, did you not? The biggest clue here is what I circled in the attached pic. IE normally has MIE, not MIE Provided By..... Easy yet difficult fix. You'll need to change some of your registry settings and the trick is to find them first. Do some Google'ing and find a legitimate site that goes through what kind of registry tweaks you can do. Drop an e-mail to them and explain your problem, that you've got IE modified from your access provider and you can't access the toolbars as a result. BEFORE RUNNING REGEDIT, ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY!!! FAIR WARNING!!! IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE REGEDIT, FIND SOMEONE THAT DOES!!! FAIR WARNING!!! If that doesn't work, contact the tech support section of your access provider and explain the problem to them. Be sure to tell them that it worked before you used their install disk and it didn't work immediately after. If they don't want to help you, let me recommend Mozilla's Firefox. I started using it last week because I was fed up with how easy IE can be manipulated from unwanted outside influence, not to mention the pop-up ads. Firefox is great (especially the tab function!), easy to use, stops every single pop-up you don't want, user-friendly, and very much like Netscape was pre-AOL. Others here use Opera, but I'm not familiar with that because I got Firefox first and loved it. Hope this helps.... Rob

| I personally use mozilla.....the problem however is that my dad (who's computer needs fixing) refuses to use anything other than what he considers to be mainstream.....he's of the belief that it's the best because the most people use it and no matter how much persuading I try nothing will change his mind. As far as the fixing of IE, I tried to uninstall (and I use the term loosely) and reinstall IE but it says there is a newer version already on my comp and won't let me install it. So, I was wondering if anybody would be that uses XP home would be able to check out the registry settings for IE and give me an example of what they should be. BTW I found that this only happens in the one profile in XP the other four profiles do NOT have this problem. Thanks in advance for your help. Rob, thanks for the warm welcome...I've been lurking for awhile and finally felt the need to just delve in. | ||

Well, unfortunately, the registry for your dad's computer and more specifically for your dad's profile is just as unique as a DNA strand. We can't just say that this key needs to be deleted and this needs to be modified. What did the tech guys at Sympatico say about it? Did you find any sites on the 'net that are for registry questions? Do the other three or four profiles use the same IE browser or do they use Mozilla? Could possibly be that your dad also downloaded some adware/spyware by accident, too, that could be preventing you from accessing the tool bar options. For example, when you install Morpheus, it in turn installs a tool bar called "My Way" or "My Search" that in a minor annoyance to get rid of. Have you talked with the tech guys at Sympatico? Let us know what they say. Rob Edit: Why not use that old arguement of "Well, if your friends jump off a bridge, would you?" that parents always love using against us? He must believe that IE is the best because 99% of the population believe it to be the only browser out there since Netscape went under. Tell him that the real computer nuts all use Firefox or Opera. IE is so security weak that it was in the news last week where the experts were tearing it a new oriface because 100% of the adware/spyware/pop-ups out there are designed with IE security holes in mind. | I use Mozilla Firefox and uninstalled IE Use Ad Aware which finds most spyware entries (www.lavasoftusa.com) Just use Google Toolbar with the pop up blocker and don't pay money for software that you can get for free Don't use IE
