| I am slightly confused, mostly by the naming scheme of products. ![]() I've been looking for a way to connect the internet to my xbox360 (upstairs), my router is downstairs. So I remembered something about Power Over Ethernet, so I hit up wikipedia for an outline of what it was. Made enough sense to me, so I googled power over ethernet, and thats when I started getting confused by the products. Is XE102G - NETGEAR.com the same as this Linksys.com - Products/Wired/Basic Networking/Powerline & Phoneline/PLK200 or this? Power over Ethernet (PoE) Adapter Kit - DWL-P200 by D-Link Their terrible product photos don't help too much either. Instead of being slightly confused, now I'm heavily confused. Right now I'm looking to use the netgear. Help? Suggestions? Deals? | ||

The first two you got there will use the power lines, or more specific the branch wiring of your house to transmit data... The Netgear only delivers a max of 14Mbps while the Linksys is a 100Mbps device... The last one you got will carry power(5-12vdc) through your cat5 wiring to power up a device, like a camera, printer, or an extender etc. Last edited by BeetleMan; 20-September-08 at 11:21 AM.. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||

| The answer is Yes, according to their on-line introduction demo -- "simultaneous connections through every powered outlet." Big question: how old is your house? I had a powerline network in my previous home, built in 1972, and barely got 2-3 MB/s tops. It was great for e-mail and casual browsing, but not for streaming media (pr0n ), audio, and particularly not online games. If your house is newer, just hope the wiring was done properly. If it's older, than I wouldn't go that route unless I had a money-back option on the purchase.Note, that was 5 years ago as well, and the technology may have improved for quality over powerline. In fact, based on their HD version, it seems there's QoS involved as well. -J | ||
