Default Router Speed Issues

I have 3 PCs directly wired into a 5 port Linksys EZXS55W Switch and then that goes into a Linksys BEFSR11 1 port router then into my modem. The problem is that I noticed my speed has not been so good lately, so I ran a speed test on speakeasy.net. With that configuration I only get 1.6Mb, but I am paying for 3!

I can hook one PC directly into the modem and get 3.2Mb, so it's pretty obvious the router is causing it. Now, buying a new router isn't an issue, I am just trying to figure out if a new one will solve my problem. I know using a router will slow me down some, but damn this is crazy!

I have been looking at the Linksys WRT54GL, but I am going to be extremely angry if I buy a new router and it still cuts me in half.

I am fairly good with networking, but this is something I have never ran into before. Unfortunately, I don't have another one I can swap out to see if that fixes the issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated! I am looking to buy a new one within the next 2 or 3 days!

Wow I can't believe nobody has ran into this issue before! I guess I will just buy a new router. Any other suggestions?

I think that's the exact problem I was having a couple months ago. The service here is 5mbps and I was only getting 2 or less in the speed tests.

I reset the router, updated the firmware and ran a bunch of diagnostics with no luck. So I finally gave up and bought a new router. That fixed my problem.

The Linksys products seem to have a lifespan of about 3-4 years. First the router craps out (about 4 years old) then about 3 weeks later the wireless access point died (about the same age). My friends have also said they've had Linksys routers die after about the same lifespan.

But hey, they're cheap and they work great when they're working, so I can't complain.

Good luck with your problem.

Not sure if you tried this have you tried a different cable's, i know at one time i had a bad cable that did the same thing and ran a new cable and that cured my issue with speed.also something else you should check is the main cable that is hook to your router that also can cause a issue with your speed if it is pretty old over years of use and weathering.
This just a suggestion that i would try before you go out buy new gear.

Now if you plan on getting a new router i would suggest you go with one of these my self i like D-link over Linksys.

D-Link wired gaming router.

D-Link wireless gaming router.

LINKSYS WRT54GS

EDIT: to get the rep button to work right click on it and click on open link in new window should work that way for you..

Thanks for the suggestion, that's something I will definitely try. As for the brand, I was thinking of getting one of the Linksys ones that you can flash to the dd-wrt firmware.

I got one of those D-Link DGL4300 routers that I am not using. It works great but when I got FiOS it came with a 4 port gigabit switch with wireless router. So I just use that with my netgear gigabit switch.

If you want to get one to flash, get this one: Newegg.com - LINKSYS WRT54GL IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router - Wireless Routers

It has more memory than the G model. You might want to check out Tomato instead of dd-wrt.

That is the one I bought. Looks like a solid router. Thanks for all the suggestions and I will check out Tomato, never heard of it until now.
