Talking Question about Verizon FiOS Internet Speeds

I have Verizon FiOS Internet in the house now and I was wondering do I need a 10/100/1000Mbps switch?
I want to hook up min. of 5 more PC's in the House

I would think it bottle-necks from the FiOS router to a Switch that only does 10/100?

Even with 10 pc's running your probaly not going to reach 10 mb/s, so 10/100 is fine. Gigabit only comes in handy when your doing large file transfers and will have no effect on your internet speed.

Unless you are getting a 100+ mbps fios connection then the switch will not be a bottle neck to the internet, no matter how many computers you are running behind it. As far as I know Verizon is not yet offering 100+ mbps connections so the only way that you will see any benefit from running a gigabit switch is if you are doing large file transfers between your computers. Even then you can transfer a lot of data very fast through a 100mbps switch so it shouldnt be a problem. At full 100mbps speeds you can transfer a gigabyte in under two minutes.

First, welcome to the land of speed.

The only benefit of a gigabit switch will be for transfering files between your PCs. The internet connection is 20/5 so you won't bottleneck at the switch even with a 10/100.

What I have noticed over the past 7 months is that if you have one PC that generates the majority of your traffic, connect that directly to the switch/router Verizon gives you and put the rest on their own switch. And if you have a 2nd nic in that PC, put it on the second switch. This will segment the traffic and prevent heavy internet usage from impacting your internal network (and vice versa).

I'm getting 8/512 on cable and all machines go through a 10/100 switch and I have no bottlenecking.

DOCSIS 3 is right around the corner. Planning for the future would be a good idea. Wish I had all gigabit switches in my house.

As for internet speeds I doubt it will affect it.

Not only is DOCSIS 3 coming but another type of cable internet may be coming too. I can't remember the name of it but it has an abbreviation like DOCSIS does.
