Default Linux boffs. File sharing without passwords?

I have a server running off Ubuntu (Feisty) i think.

I know its not the ideal choice for a server but its the one im most familiar with since i use it every day at work.

Ive got Samba installed as well as SSH servers, VNC stuff, torrentflux and some other stuff.

My media PC is running off of windows (unsure what exactly yet but WILL be windows based)

My BIG issue at the moment is with Samba.

For the life of me i cannot figure out how to share my music without any fricking passwords!

I just want to turn on my HTPC and have my media available to me. Simply. With no passwords.

Ive got a sort of hack working now where my HTPC is autologging on with the same username / password as the samba stuff, but it still requires physically browsing into the files through Network explorer before the files are available in my media software / media player / winamp etc etc.

So... is there any way of sharing files on Linux box, without stupid password / security, so that it 'just works?'

Thanks,

Mark

Probably the easiest way is to map the samba shares in windows. Goto My Computer -> Map Network Drive and follow the wizards. It always worked for me. You do have to put in a password, but only once.

There is a way of making samba having your shares have no password, but mapping the share as a drive in windows will make the share appear as a drive letter, a little easier for programs to 'see'

Hey, check this page out. It is geared towards Red Hat linux, but it should provide you some more information.

At the very least you may need to set up a 'guest' account with an empty password (if that is allowed . . . I can't fully remember) in the Samba server to react to the typical windows 'guest' call when attempting to access shares.

Hope it helps.
