~$60 Linksys AP Turns Into ~$800 AP

Well this weekend I took 10minutes out of my day to turn my ~$60 Linksys WRT54GL into a ~$800 full featured AP Router. The bios I used was from http://www.dd-wrt.com this is opensource and basically runs linux on your router!

Step 1
Supported Devices:
Supported Devices - DD-WRT Wiki

Step 2
Download bios:
(I started with the mini-generic and also got the standard-vpn-generic and std-voip-generic)
Downloads

Step 3
Set your AP router to default settings and don't enter it over httpS enter it with good old http

Step 4
(Flashed mini-generic 1st)
Flash the new bios

Step 5
Hard reset the router (hold reset button and while holding it unplug the router then plug it back in still holding the reset and after you give power hold for 30seconds)

Step 6
Flash the standard-vpn-generic

Step 7
I now have a really nice router!

I love my new router I can now ssh into it and run some commands! I hope that he'll add in iptables because he did not include that in the router but he did add other firewall stuff but iptables would have been nice for torrent work arounds!

DD-WRT for the win! I've been using it for 2 years now and have had nothing but GREAT experiences with it. Being able to fine tune your coverage by way of upping the transmission is a wonderful tool in this house.

drougnor do you have any special firewall setting or any settings you would like to share?

Only did the basics, really.

Made sure to change out the basic admin username and password, which is the best thing you can do to secure your router.

Next, I put on some good WPA protection on the wireless with a 64 bit passkey generated here (GRC rules for security!)

Lastly, the best security measures for the other pc's on the network is the fact that my router is a nice NAT router. No random virus related BS hitting my pc's as it's all bouncing off the router and getting NO response (which is WICKED against random port scans.)

yeah i did the same stuff. going to work on my firewall settings once i get my linux router back from my friend or have him send my iptables config to me (he was getting hacked by the chinese IP range)

Thought I would to a search before posting... I like this! I used the v23 vpn generic version, just flashed once. Dang that sucker has some options! Had problems getting my WPA setup untill I renamed mine and found out there is a open Linksys router in range...
