| Apex Advanced Techie | Hello All - I got a Netopia 2240N Modem (combo) hooked into my Linksys WRT54G and it works fine I am getting my 6mb speed and all. I only run into an issue with trying to use certain apps that require certain ports to be open. Now I go into my Linksys and forward the ports, like I normally do, but that does not solve the problem as when I run a NAT test it tells me the IP that is rejecting it is not the IP I have on my sys (when I check with IP config) I look in the modem and it turns out its the Local Address (which matches the static IP address that my ISP gave me) but its not the one that is being sent/broadcast via the wireless router. That is diff from what my computer says is my IP and my DNS is that of the modems IP address. I have tried setting port forwarding through the router and pinholes through the modem but nothing works as what is blocking it is that IP which I am not sure how I can get it to stop doing that as I have never had a static IP before. Can anyone help? Does that makes any sense, can any one follow what I mean/talking about? I hope so cause I am lost here. Many Thanks | |

| if you're behind a soho router, all requests made to hosts outside of your network will appear to all come from the same address to outside hosts; if you already knew that, my appologies have you tried putting your computer in the DMZ? this probably isn't the best idea to do for a while, especially without a fire wall. but if you haven't got it figured out, it might be worth a try to set up the DMZ and see if the applications you speak of work. what is this NAT test you speak of? | ||

Yep, I tried using DMZ just to test and see and it still did not work. I am trying to use Vuze / Azureus. They have a NAT test in it to test that the right ports are open etc...

| I am not sure I followed you, so I am going to try to explain it back and see if I got it right... ISP --> Netopia --> Linksys --> Wired/Wireless Network That part I am sure I got right. So let's add some details, such as breaking down each device into their two interfaces, WAN and LAN. [Netopia WAN Interface : Static IP] <--> [Netopia LAN Interface --> 192.168.1.1] [Linksys WAN Interface : 192.168.1.2]<--> [Linksys LAN Interface : 192.168.2.1] Home Network Devices [DHCP Provided by Linksys : 192.168.2.x] This configuration assumes that the Netopia and Linksys are BOTH routers. Therefore there is a network (192.168.1.x) between them and your PC is a 192.168.2.x address. If this is the case you need to make sure that port forwarding is configured on BOTH devices. The best way to test it is to connect your PC directly to the Netopia (I assume it only has 1 LAN port) and run your tests. If that works than the Netopia is configured properly. Next, you connect to your Linksys and test. If it works, all good. If not, then there is your problem. If you have your Linksys configured as a BRIDGE device, then you shouldn't need to setup anything on it. It will simply forward all traffic to all network segments. In which case the Netopia is the issue, but it does not sound like you have it setup that way. If possible, I would start with connecting the PC directly to the ISP if possible, but I am assuming that you need the Netopia device first. | ||

That sounds about right to be, I mean configuration wise. My knowledge in this area is superficial at best and it took a 2 days going back and forth with my ISP to get it setup right to being with so whatever and however it got cobbled together is beyond my kin. I do know that I cannot test it as the main gear is not attached to my computer, I share the net so I can't really mess with it physically. I have tried forwarding the port in my linksys and putting pinholes in the modem, which I think I said not sure though, and it still doesn't fix it. No, I can't just use the Netopia because, as is evident , there is more the one computer that uses the connection. So I am stuck as to what to do.

Wish I could but every time I mess with the other persons computer, with whom the equipment is the same room with, I get an unwelcome response. In other words I don't have the equipment anywhere near me to test it and I can't test on the computer it is near as its not my computer. But I am noticing that for some reason when I am downloading with AZ some stuff is green while other is yellow , but even when green if I run the NAT test it still fails. And it doesn't stay green for long.
