| Apex Techie Wannabe | Games are getting more and more intense and requiring more resources. But when does it cross the line that you need to upgrade to a gigabit switch in order to provide lag free full bandwidth to all players? Just curious (buying a switch soon, want it to last some time). | |

| It all depends on how many players you have.. and how much traffic your using.. 100base is generally fine for large lans as long as your using some decent switches like Dell Power Connects or such.. Managed it nice... Gigabit will be something you will want if have a lot of ppl sharing files across the network.. that is the main issue that would prompt a move to gigabit networks... | ||

| If i remember lans correctly (havnt been to one since highschool, 3 years ago) Lans were about these three things 1. Getting ultra jacked up on BAWLS 2. pwning your best friends 3. sharing your massive pron collection among other things So, taking into account rule 3, get the gigabit ![]() ![]() ![]() | ||

| Well, if you want to take 3 into account, you should go for a fiber switched network. ![]() Gigabit switches are so inexpensive now that there is never a reason not to get a gigabit switch. It is not possible to have too much bandwidth. | ||

| Apex Techie Wannabe | Thanx guys. Given the budget and everything, I think I found a switch by, of all companies, Asus that seems to have exactly what I want. Newegg.com - ASUS GigaX1024P 10/100Mbps + 1000Mbps Switch 24 RJ-45 for 10 /100Mbps BASE-TX ports 2 RJ-45 for 10/100/1000Mbps BASE-T ports Up to 8,000 MAC Address Table - Retail 24 ports 10/100 and 2 extra ports for 1Gbps for just over $100 sounds like a smoking deal to me. Hopefully I have better experience with this product than I have on their mobo lines a few years back. Figure I can do a server on a single gig line, and expansion (if never needed, not likely though) on the second one. Another thing that drove me to this is the fanless desing. This will probably sit in the closet in my room, and I worked so hard for a silent PC, might as well try and get whatever else I can silent. | |

| That switch has only 2 gigabit ports, for linking switches together. You want something like this netgear 8 port switch | ||

| we usualy have 1x24 100mb/s switch for most people. People who have large wares collections to share go on a giga switch connected to the 100mb/s switch via a 10gigabit link. But thats due to the hardware that we could actualy get cheaply. | ||
