AVG Free anti-virus works fine for me and I keep it because it's free and has semi-daily updates. Paying for anti-virus protection is a joke. Best defense is possible without antivirus:
  • Use a browser like Firefox with extensions you can download and install, such as NoScript to block unknown sites for any scripting, and FlashBlock to block unknown flash in sites.
  • Don't ever trust any P2P downloads. If you want P2P, know the risks you run.
  • Don't trust documents from friends (have them e-mail it to you in a webmail system that checks for viruses in attachments). In other words, either don't let anyone copy files to or from your PC via a flash drive unless you have anti-virus software.
  • Disable services you don't use such as the File Sharing "Server" service and "Remote Connection".
  • Run at least a firewall and configure it properly if you host any web content on your PC or a server on your network. This is also a good idea if you play any online games where your IP{ is shown. Best defense is an Intrusion Detection system, but those either cost a bundle or require a seperate Linux/*nix box and working knowledge of the intrusion detection software. Typically only businesses would consider an Intrusion Detection system.

AVG is a great free antivirus.

I also use Avast! (Also Free), and Norton (Free from the school).

Symantec corporate edition 10.2

As long as it is up to date it's bulletproof.

I have no use for it myself, but I recommend ClamWin. Free and open source under the GPL.

I use Avira AntiVir. Came upon it while reading this:
Mega Antivirus Test

And love it.
