| i wanted to build a new rig (for gaming). I dont know anything about overclocking so i thought id ask the experts . I wanted to buy two p4 3.0 and overclock them as much as i can. can anyone tell me the best motherboard for the job?should i get anything other than the stock processor coolers?(regardless of noise because i always use headphones) could someone walk me through it as im sure its a lot more bo**ocks setting up to p4s than 1 and overclocking them. could they both run at diffirent speeds? | ||

| If your THAT blind to buy a 3.0Ghz p4 for gaming then your on your own. Drop the Dell user routine. Look at the beniches. A 3200+ Athlon 64 kills the 3.8Ghz p4 in most gaming bencmarks! Where does that put that POS 3.0GHz. Not only is a 3200+ faster for gaming, its cheaper, runs ALOT cooler, and doesnt require a very expensive motherboard. I tryed to play cs source and BF2 on the family pc. Wich is a 3.2 with a 9800Pro. It failed. Of course if your looking to do ALOT of multi tasking, this will be perfect, but as I am reminded of another member asking to make a gaming rig, and didn't want to use gaming parts, I figure this can go bad, really soon. AMD-> IntelIntel and Mac users are getting closer and closer everyday.(literal) | ||

| Are you building 2 rigs or are you going with a Dual Core Proccesor? I'm not even sure if there are dual socket 939 boards. Personally I have never seen one but well there is a great chance that I am very wrong. If you do find one that has 2 sockets(any proccesor P4, amd 64), I doubt you will be able to overclock that very much if at all since dual socket boards are mostly made for servers. | ||

And do you actaully want a dual core CPU or do you want to have 2 single core cpus or do you want to build 2 rigs? As of now i have no idea what you are inteding on doing.
Do you want 2 single core cpu's or 1 dual core cpu?

| For what purpose? Only programs that are designed to use smp technology benefit from dual core rigs. Games, for example, will only make use of a single processor. So, unless you are running alot of server / workstation apps (including complex multimedia and 3d rendering) there really isn't any benefit. | ||

I was thinking the same thing, the more we know of what you want to do the more we can help. ![]()

| i also do a lot of 3d designing and movie editing. making mods for hl2 and virtual films using machinima are some of my faviourite pastimes (lol i sound gay). so yeah i do know that not many games would benifit from dual processor configuration but level designing and 3d rendering would ![]() | ||

Ok that is much better. that stuff I know will do good with dual cpu's.

| What you are looking for is the Pentium D, it is a dual core CPU on one Chip, no need to buy 2 seperate CPU's.
Even better for gaming is the AMD X-2 processor, and it will keep up with the Intel in most other apps.

| Necro hit you up with his awesome intillect and information sources, and he's the man to see for all your CPU performance, as far as I'm concerned. My two cents would have to involve not going with a dual P4 system, because I absolutely hate those toaster oven, overrated processors. You would probably get just as much, if not more performance out of a dual-core Athlon 64 with some other high-end hardware to compliment it. Get yourself a PCI-E video card and a nice motherboard, about a gig or gig and a half of memory, then you'll be cooking for all your gaming and video editing needs. Cheers! | ||

Umm..yes, Dual cores OC just like a Single core..but refer to the statement above, I guess you missed one of the links I posted ![]() http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2484
