Default Asus P4V8X-X can't overclock

I am pretty new to overclocking, but I have read a lot and can't seem to find an answer. I am not looking for anything major it is more that I just want to see if I can. I had a P4 1.7 and tried to overclock it with this board and I could only get it to go the 5% overclock. I tried manual settings but that didn't work either. I found out that they are very poor overclockers and found a cheap p4 2.2. These from what I read are good, but still can't OC past 5%. This one posts at 10% but won't run windows. I have read that some other asus boards have similar problems and I saw someone suggesting that asus purposley blocked it in the bios. Here are the system specs.
P4 2.26 533FSB 512k
Asus P4v8x-x motherboard latest bios 1008
Ultra 512 mb ddr-333 memory

Also I have noticed that my 3.3v are low at only 3.0v. Could this be the problem?

it could be your memory.. are you doing a fsb overclock or multiplier? im thinking your doing fsb and your memory is getting to hot or somthing..... try setting your memory clock lower then increase FSB and see what happenes...by doing that ive been able to get my 2.8E to 3.5ghz totally stable

I agree with MicronX, however since this is a P4 he could only be doing an FSB overclock (unless he has an engineering sample but thats unlikely). I would think that the 1.7 is a Willamette core and these are not good OC'ers anyway.

With that said if the second core is a northwood then the chip should be able to hit a better OC than 10% with windows remaining stable. I had a Northwood cored Celeron Mobile (256K) 1.5ghz and I was able to OC it by 100% to 3Ghz before it started to show some stability issues (this was on air).

I would have to agree that you need to adjust the memory divider or purchase some better RAM. I don't think this early on in the OC process that you should need to start messing with your voltages but good advice is always to have a decent PSU anyway. That doesn't mean a 600w over a 450w, it means a strong stable PSU that might only be a 400w. Just my $0.02

Good luck

Well I believe it is my memory because I lowered the ram speed to 266 and I was able to overclock stable at 10%. So I figured it was ram related. Now I just need to get some better ram. Any suggestions I am not looking to spend a lot and I really only want about 20% overclock. Thanks for the help guys.

Well I got new ram, PQI turbo ddr400 2x256 chips, I read som reviews and it seems to be good stuff. I still have the same problem at the exact same spot. I cannot get past a FSB of 148. I don't have any dividers that I can find for the agp and pci. Could this be my problem. When I bought the board it said the fsb could be overclocked to 800. Any suggestions as what it could be or what I could try. Thanks again
