Default P4-M 2.6Ghz (Laptop CPU)

Hi all,

Not sure what socket this is, its from my laptop. Motherboard has gone on it and msi want like 400$ to get a new motherboard for it. Ive been told that this cpu i have can be used in desktop pcs.

I'd like to know where i could get the converter from ((UK)) and what its called
E.G: 100 PIN TO 200 PIN (even though its not, and that was just an example )

This guy iive seen has a 1.6 Dothan P4-M and has overclocked it to 2.4 at stock volts. I'd possibly like to do this, and my P4-M 2.6 Isn't worth selling for £60-70 ($120-$140) I could pick up a motherboard and some ram too.

Thanks!

k got ya, they dont even make 2.6ghz Pentium m, so u have a pentium 4 mobile .. its 478pin like any other regular pentium 4 so i believe u can just put your processer on a regular desktop motherboard without an adaptor , amd is like that so i would think intel is also.. but im not 100% sure.

yeh thats right. The P4 mobile is like a low voltage version of the P4 ...much like its AMD Athlon 2500M equivilant. It uses socket 478, and will go into all common 478 motherboards. CPUz will also pick it up as a P4-M.

If you put the P4 mobile in the desktop motherboard then the speedstep will bring it down to 12x as opposed to 26x (fsb on these is 100Mhz, quad pumped to 400). This is good for you if you have a motherboard capable of 200FSB, because you can break pin BSEL1 and the motherbaord will instantly see this as a 2.4Ghz, 200Mhz FSB CPU.

Your CPU is almost certainly a Northwood core and is identical to the desktop variant in almost all aspects (apart from no integrated heat spreader and the speedstep). It is my understanding that these core's come from the premium part of the silicon wafer and hence can run hotter and faster.

The mobile Celeron (Northwood-256) is also compatible with the desktop motherboard. I am running a 2.4Ghz Northwood-256 at 3.4Ghz in my motherboard right now (but this multi is too high so I've just bought a 1.5 that I'm going to try the BSEL1 pin mod on and hopefully get about 3Ghz, well its worth a try and it only cost me five of her majesty's english pounds

Good luck
