Default Pentium 4 - HT (3.0 GHz) OC Help

Could someone please direct me to CPU/Motherboard Overclocking directions? Since I am a total n00b I will need exact step by step directions for this if possible. I saw another thread that a new rig was oced from 3.2 GHz to 3.89 GHz... thats $%*$'% amazing.

System Specs:
Gateway 510XL
Pentium 4 w/ Hyper Threading Technology (3.0 GHz)
2 GB Corsair PC3200 DDR400 RAM
BFG NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT (AGP 8x - 256mb)
140 GB HD - Windows XP Home Edition

Im not sure of the motherboard but I believe its an Intel. If anymore info is needed I believe i can get it from a bechmarking program just let me know what is needed. (*n00b*)

Wow,

I haven't heard the name "Gateway" in a long time.

I have bad news for you. You can't (legally) OC a Gateway computer.

Step by step?

Step 1: Get a new ASUS ABIT or DFI motherboard designed for Overclocking

Step 2: Get a high quality power supply with at least 450 watts, like the Antec Neo Power 480, the stock one will not be happy when you start trying to "Wheeze the Juice"

Step 3: let us know when the new parts are installed, then we can help you Overclock it

Dont worry about it - I dont even know what he meant by that.

Like Necro said - Gateway makes/uses nutered motherboards with no OC features - most all manufacturers do this. Grab a good mobo and PSU and then OC away.

3.89 is fairly common on a 3.2 prescott - I had mine just a titch under 4 GHZ but the damn voltage was causing a mini furnace effect and the temps were *HIGH*.....so I settled for 3.71 GHz.

While your buying parts replace your heatsink and fan - I had good luck with the ThermalRight XP120 - the XP90 is good if you dont have the clearance for the 120. Others have really good luck with Zalman - just stay away from ThermalTake..........they mostly are craptastical.

A long time ago I was searching for alternate BIOS' (to enable OCing) for my Dell Mobo. I read somewhere where it violates the EULA agreements.

As far as I know that is not a Gateway policy, ANY PC you OC will void the warranty, but I have never heard of it being "Illegal"...can you imagine sitting in jail and having to explain to "Bubba" what yer in for?

I can't imagine it being illegal either. Sure it'll void your warranty. Hell, you bought it, it's yours. Use it for a boat anchor if you wish. (good use for gateway by the way).

NVIDIA does not make motherboards, just the chipsets..and mostly for AMD.

They are going to start ofering SLI chipsets for Intel, but not for a bit.

In the past NVIDIA works best with AMD CPU's and ATI with Intel, not that they don't work fine the other way around, it just seems to be bit more "Optimized" that way when it comes to drivers.

The PC3200 memory is going to be your limitation on OC'ing your 3.0 CPU even if you did use dividers. I'd suggest some Corsair PC4000 (500Mhz) memory to really give you great OC'ing potential without having to use dividers. I have a 3.0E Pentium and 1GB Corsair PC4000 and I got mine up to 3.60. I'm sure I could take it more, but I'm just using this as a media center PC.

You may be wasting your money on a new motherboard because your are going to use the same 400MHz PC3200 memory which is going to be your bottleneck no matter what you do. Talk to the other experts around here who have a little more experience oc'ing, but in my personal ventures memory was always the limiting factor with Intel CPUs.
