Default Rebuilding computer suggestions

Hey all,
I want to upgrade my PC. I purcahsed a real nasty mobo last january that came with a 1.7ghz P4.

The board is a first generation AS45GT Shuttle board.
You can no longer find that board anywhere but since I bought it OEM, i could not send it back for another as the first generation one is a complete mess.

Anyways, I have decided to upgrade, saving enough I decided to go with giga-byte. I have already ordered this board:

I got a pretty good deal for a 100 bucks brand new.

Now about the CPU. I have an intel P4 478 1.7ghz 256 L2 cache. Meaning the first generation 478 chips.

I was thinking of going a 2.0A with 512 but I dont know. I want to keep the cpu at a price range of around 150 bucks.

Also what you guys think I should clock the 2.0A to?

What Heatsink would be best for that type of board with a 2.0A (no water coolers). I am running a cheiftech black server case, the ones that Antec sells.

only difference is i never put on the left side panel, its always open since I always work around with the parts and switch drives.

I clean the dust every so often. Ok guys, please help me with my questions.

Thanks

the Avc sunflower is a great heatsing for a p4. I know when I had it on a 2.0 it droped my temps arounnd 10c and with my 2.4 it is close to a 10c difference.

Thanks biohazardpc!

I have disconnected every possible fan inside the computer other than the ones that came with the items such as GPU cooler, cpu, and motherboard. Reason why is cause my cheiftech case came with the loudest 3 fan you can possibly find. Imagine a vacuum in your computer.

I know that in the winter my comp wont need as much cooling as in the summer as the side panel is open. Do you guys recommend a bigger heatsink for the cpu?

The Avc sunflower is very nice, but I would like a few suggestions about what the best heatsink would be for a 2.0A P4 for overclocking

well, my suggestion to you is to keep your case closed. if you have good cooling, your overall temps shold be lower with the side on. of course, that comes from proper cooling. its not that much of a hassle to just slide it off if you need to. then you dont have to clean out as much dust too.

Well Im not sure about others but the Volcano 7+ has a switch that will let you run the fan slower or faster when you want it. Thermaltake make a good heatsink. I believe they have a new one for the 3 ghz. That should keep your 2 ghz pretty cool. go to:

www.thermaltake.com

and have a look around. Thats just my suggestion.

What model is the Gigabyte mobo Glad'? I have a 7IXEH, it's for low end AMD chips, but does have a useful feature - Easytune support. This lets you up the front side bus speed, so you can overclock without faffing about with pencils & multipliers. There is also the option to use the stock setting on reboot, so if it does conk out on you, at least you know it'll reboot ok. If your mobo _does_ have that, I don't suggest upping it more than 10%, unless your video card & ram are _very_ high quality.

I'd suggest you put the side panel back on - if your going to overclock you'll need decent airflow. How hard is it to use the catch on the panel anyway? I don;t have any specific recommendations fan wise, but there are a lot of 80mm options out there - lower cfm jobs, variable speed fans, etc, you can use them on 7 volts rather than 12 with not much of a tweak, or different voltages (& therefore speeds) with a resistor, or your might want to consider a rheobus. You don't have to use all four case fan apertures, one in the front sucking in (the lower one ideally), and one blowing out on the back (the higher of the two apertures preferably) is going to be a lot better than nothing...

Hmmm, doesn't mention Easytune Ignore the first 1/2 of my previous post, looks like you're going to have to OC the hard way.

Guys, thanks for all the help.
I looked into it Maverick, I do no like the fact that the fan is too loud so I went with biohazardpc and ordered me an AVC Sunflower heatsink.

I got it for a good price too. Cost me 16 dollars with shipping from an online ebay store. On the sites it was 29.99 plus 3-4 dollars shipping.

I am thinking of adding a few case fans and closing it up however, I have not decided which. I was thinking of getting Vantec stealth fans.

What size do you guys think I should get?

Hey all.
I need some help with my rebuilding.
At first I had the problem with changing boards and CPU.
I have decided to go with a 2.0A p4, a AVC Sunflower heatsink and a GA-8PE667 Ultra motherboard.

Now here is the problem:

I have a cheiftec server case. I had 4 fans inside but they were loud. I have a few questions and suggestions.

I wanted to try and purchase Vantec stealth fans, 1 intake and 2 outflow fans. However, the left panel of the case in which you open to add or remove parts is constantly open due to change of hard drives and other items.

Will the fans do anything, what size should i go for each?

Thanks

Yeah, I have an Antec that is the same style. They sit right over the PCI cards, and usually just behind the processor. I usually leave my door on, and just leave the screws out. The handle on the door makes takin' the door off an easy job. Regardless... any airflow is a good thing! Might throw in a three-way fan PSU as well, just to increase flow.

With the door off, most trapped heat will just disapate into the room anyway though... so I wouldn't go too whacky with fans.

I usually to prefer to keep it to 80MM fans because they're quiet.

Good luck with the project!

Its cool gladiator. I understand about noise. My system runs pretty loud and I just have the volcano 7 which changes speed on its on and an odd 80mm case fan. I know its probably to late now but the zalman coolers are almost unadibule. Id say give them a look just for fun. You wont find low prices but they seem to work pretty dang well from the review i read.

http://www.zalmanusa.com/

and if you ever want to passively cool your graphics card they have a monster cooler for that too. Giant heat sink and heat pipe combo.

I understand now, thanks for the support guys. I did not realise that there are so many AMD based fans in pimprig and only a few Intel based fans. I was a fan of AMD until I purchased 2 AMD cpu's. One was a 350mhz AMD k6-2 and the other a 400mhz amd k6-2 (which I am on right now until I can fully upgrade my main machine).

I heard the AMD XP line of cpu's were a different story. In fact, thanks to pimprig my mind about AMD has changed over the months but I do not think I can go with AMD until I try an AMD system that I like.

Thanks for your help guys. One more question to the Intel people.
Intel 2.0A P4. 512 l2 cache.
What is the best speed to clock it. I will be running it with DDR 333mhz ram. Should I increase the FSB speed as well?

Thanks for the help guys.
