Default dual PSU

I was stupid and bought a 450 watt PSU and now im very short on power for OCing. i cant get enough power to OC my LGA775 P4 540 (3.2) to over 3.48. If i hooked all my accessories to my old noname PSU and my CPU to the new one would it be wourth the noise level. if i do this, should i plug my new one into the 4 pin atx power connector or use my old one for that? the 24 pin connector powers the cpu, right?

thanks

*Warning* There is a risk of frying stuff when doing this, but its easy enough to get to work... as long as you don't fry something.

You'll wan have the motherboard plugged into only one of the power supplies, so either a 4-pin and a 20-pin from the same power supply or just the 24-pin. Definatley have the graphics card on the same power supply as the motherboard if it has an extra power plug. Its safest to plug anything that connects to the motherboard into the same power supply (hard-drives, cd-roms, floppy disk drive) but not mandatory. That leaves putting the fans and the lighting on the 2nd power supply (and for more overclocking power, your hard-drives, cd-roms, and floppy disk... if you're willing to take the risk).

If the non-motherboard power supply has a 20-pin connector take a look at this:

To power on the non-motherboard power supply, all you have to do is connect the PS_ON# pin to the GND right below it and it'll power on. Pull the wire out, and it'll power off. I don't know 24 pin connector layouts though.

seems to me that you could just splice the case powe button cables to go to the mobo and the seccond PSUs pwr on and a ground, that way they will both fire up at about the same time (acualy the seccond would power on a split seccond faster, but thats ok if its jsut drives)

I realy wouldn't try pushing that expensive hardware with a no-name power supply

Adding another cheap POS in the mix will only increase your chances for something to go wrong..

Fortran makes a good budget power supply, I have seen to many people firsthand cheap out on a power supply and kill there rigs, even at stock speeds

I agree with Solid, but if you really want to, JE wrote a tutorial on a DIY Dual PSU starter.

I forgot that there would be some startup problems. i was thinking that i could just hook up the molex connectors to my cd drives, HDs, cold cathodes and fans. i guess i wont be doin this. Im dont want to start messing with power wires, its a brand new PC.

Yeah, go with necro's suggestion the Fortron Source PSU. I've seen many people around forums say good things about them.

its not really that the low quality PSUs are weak (though they usually are), its that the power they provide isn't very stable so having two low quality ones won't help. i would just get a new power supply.

I've heard some pretty good things about the superflower also, are you sure that its your PSU not giving you enough power?

ithe psu is great, and not expencive.

I used the Overclockulator and filled everything out and found out that if i wanted to OC it to 3.7 i would need 466 and ive laready OCed my GPU so the power requirements would be even higher.

is it possible to just add a switch to turn on the older psu so i can just turn it on that way, instead of doin all that other stuff?

This is what you can do. Take a second psu. another 350 doesnt matter, and cut 2 orange wires 2 black 2 red and 2 yellow and somehow directly connect them to your other connector. You will also need to do the green wire the same way. And it wouldn't hurt to connect the -5 and -12 supply lines while you are doing it.

nothing to it.

This is very true..ive seen people jack vc's mobo's and cpu's due to a pos PSU.
