| Apex Techie Wannabe | I'm attempting to build a new system, but I don't have the money for all new parts. So I'm going through my dell 8100 and trying to figure out what I can take with me to the new system. Obviously I need a new MOBO, case, and PSU. However, I was wondering if it's possible to take the p4 chip out of my current mobo and use it in my new one. I've looked around to see if this is possible and I haven't been able to find any information, which leads me to belive it actually isn't possible. I just wanted to ask some people who knew what they were talking about. | |

| ok ba wutever u say ![]() fezzball, i really dont see y u would want to upgrade the case, the mbo and psu....ur upgrading things that wont give you any performace gain since u deff wont oc or anything, ull gain more performance by getting more ram, better video, and a faster processor | ||

| Fezz, strippin' out your 8200, if you have a stand alone graphics, sound, modem, or network cards, you should be able to strip all of 'em and just replace 'em as you can with faster parts (the modem and NIC shouldn't need upgraded). If everything is integrated, I have a feelin' you might be better stayin' with the 8200 until you can afford the change-over! Last edited by Darksamurai; 05-January-03 at 05:19 PM.. | ||

You can count the pins ![]() Its really easy to tell the diffrence 478 on the left and 423 on the right. As for upgrading your system......it depends on the speed of your CPU, if you happy with what you got, defintly use your current CPU......You can of course scrap your Drives and you HD, although you need to do a fresh format of your drive and a reinstall of Windoze when you get all your new hardware togther, otherwise you are just asking for trouble And remeber Dell's use the propriatary PSU and mobo's....so if you are gonna upgrade one youve got to do both, try plugging in a Dell PSU to a new mobo and youall have some crispy critters(and vise-versa). | And even if you can't tell the difference after the fact, the socket itself will usually denote 423 or 478 right on it. Altogether you could build a new system for not too much money. I say wait. I'm waiting myself for better components to come out before I build...and by that time, prices will have dropped. And putwig, I have a socket 478 willamette and it has 256 L2 cache | ||
