| Hey guys, currently I have a stable system with my xeon 3220 @ 3.4 with the multiplier x8 with fsb 425. The ram is also running at 850mhz 5-5-5-15 (5-5-5-18 stock) I read everything I can and I see a people talking that the xeon 3xxx can handle 70C meaning 60C below isn't too bad. Currently 1.475 vcore stable for 3.4 // 1.550vcore stable for 3.5 // 1.65 vcore not stable for 3.6 I Dunno if I should push it higher.. with more voltage.. or if my ram could be the wall that is blocking the performance.. The mobo is running the cpu and ram synced. my specs are evga 750i ftw, xeon 3220, msi 8800gt sli oc, corsair ddr2 800, creative x-fi. Any help would be much appriciated.. I had 3dmark 06 hitting 16.6k/16.7k then I changed some video card settings and now it's down to 16.2k/16.3k.. if I could get more power I would like to, but I'm scared to push the cpu beyond 1.7 for sure since I'm on air cooling. I am using the tuniq tower120 though, my temps right @ 3.4 are 54C avg Last edited by Demalii; 15-July-08 at 11:43 PM.. | ||

| Download intels thermal anylysis tool and run it to see what kind of load temps you get techPowerUp! :: Download Intel Thermal Analysis Tool | ||

Perhaps it doesn't work for x64 vista? I installed and restarted because it wouldn't open.. still the program shows a window for about 1/4 second and closes, that's it. I downloaded Core Temp and it shows temps like my bios @ 54C which I didn't post before, I meant to type 54 not 44.. Without load I see it in bios @ 52C core temp shows Core 0 @ 55C+ idle, Core 1 @ 52-54C, Core 2 @ 49-50C, Core 3 @ 50-51C So if it's true that Xeon quadcores can take 70C max, then maybe I could try to get it up higher iono.. Perhaps the current temps are pushing it anyways.. On the Core temp program it also shows "Tj. Max: 100C" That can't be true right?... | Your idle temps aren't a good indicator ,you need to see what kind of temps you get with all cores fully loaded 100%!!! Its to bad TAT wont work for you its a wicked stability/thermal test. download orthos or super Pi and load test your cpu to see if it gets up past 70c. No matter what I wouldn't push it past 75c for length of time... my 2 cents.

This program Core Temp is weird.. the temps on each core are fluxuating like +/- 8 -I ran Orther and opened core temp during the test, after it just started.. and core 0/1 were 100% load and 70C, as soon as I stopped the Orther, they immediatly dropped to 60C- Below... I was gaming just 1 minute before I started this test also.. so I think maybe under load I'm hitting 60.. I push start on Orthos and the temps immediatly rise like 10C.. Like the more load, the higher the temp, when the core has no load the temp is low..

Exactly thats the whole point of thermal testing. especially on a cpu thats O.C'd 24/7. if you cant run orthos for at least 30 minutes without overheating ,you either need a better cooling solution ,less volts, or a smaller overclock...

OK well I checked my BIOS it shows 44C bro.. So I'll run orthos all night because I know i can.. this thing is pretty stable.. I just wish I could find a program to show temp accurately.

| Sempr0n? | Dude, don't go higher than 1.4vCore for everyday use! These 45nm processors can't take as much of a battering as their 65nm counterparts! And 1.675v, damn, I'd be scared to use that voltage on my old Q6600, let alone a Q9300! My Xeon (a Q9450) only requires 1.375vCore for 3.5ghz. I'm surprised I didn't recommend against that CPU, did you post a thread about it? Q9300s have less L2 cache and a smaller multiplier than Q6600s, so they're harder to overclock and perform worse clock for clock. You might find this helpful though: Overclocking Intel's Xeon X3320 processor - The Tech Report - Page 1 Also, does Orthos now load all four cores? I switched to OCCT, which some people think is better.
