| Apex Techie Wannabe | So I had no other choice than to frankenstein my gaming PC with a Compaq, as my Abit AA8XE died for some unknown reason. Anyways, I want to up the clock speed of the CPU in the Compaq. It's a 1.6ghz Dual-Core chip, running on an Asus IPILP-LC motherboard. It has Compaq's bios and my options are very limited. I'm assuming I'd have to flash it to the "factory" version of the bios before I can make any changes. I know this cpu is easily overclockable as I've read many peoples' threads regarding this CPU. I'm eventually upgrading the motherboard and graphics card, but need to crank this CPU up now. I've tried searching Google for some answers, but came up empty-handed, so any help would be appreciated. | |

| Apex Tech Fanatic | without knowing what mobo in is in that compaq system, there is little we will be able to do for you. I can tell you tho that most comp manufacs. like Dell, HP, and such do not put mobos in that can be OCed well if at all. you can answer the question yourself tho by checking out the settings in the BIOS to see what you can change in there or not. Most likely tho, all the settings will be locked ( meaning you cant change anything) so until you get a aftermarket board, i dont think your going to be able to push that CPU. but who knows... could have a decent OC-ing board. let us know | |

| Apex Techie Wannabe | The motherboard I have, as it states in the title of the thread is an Asus IPILP-LC. In terms of bios OC'ing, there's not much I can do apart from changing the SATA/PATA devices. I'm going to try and do some Windows-based OC'ing and see how that goes. On a side note, what would perform better? A Pentium 4 Prescott 3.26ghz (1mb L2/800mhz FSB) or the current E2140 | |

| I know you said it was Asus , but you need to understand that Asus makes boards for compaq and those boards are a completely different animal than thier retail boards . Almost all ASUS boards that are made for large manufacutrers like Compaq are VERY limited and are basicly just a thing to plug stuff onto, that goes for almost all boards that are made for the big guys ( HP - Compaq - Dell etc etc ) | ||

| Sempr0n? | Some people have luck with Clockgen on locked boards. As for the speed, the two CPUs would probably work out about the same, but if you could overclock the E2140 to 3ghz+ it would demolish the Prescott. Best budget board out there: Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP31-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P31 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards | |

I know the E2140 is easily overclockable to 3.0ghz, and in some cases higher. It's just a matter of me getting a better mobo. Once I do, I'm thinking of going twin 8800 GT "XXX" 512mb cards in SLI with 4gb of ram. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Well..how bad do you wanna OC? I know of a mod to the CPU wich is pretty safe if done with care and easily reversabile. It basically fools the CPU into thinking it has a higher FSB than it realy does! You will need a conductive paint pen, or equivalent (Defroster repair kit, get one at the local auto parts store) Most motherboards that don;t have OC options like increasing voltage to the CPU are perfect candidates for this. If you go from the stock 1.6GHZ- 800FSB (200 Bios) to 1066FSB (266 Bios) you will end up with 2128MHZ, well within tolerance for stock CPU voltage, you will end up with a healthy increase in performance (528MHZ OC) The next jump up is kinda iffy for stock voltage to 1333FSB (333 Bios) and will net you 2664MHZ (Over a 1GHZ OC!)but is worth a try (You might have a particularly good CPU) especially if you have a good aftermarket CPU cooler, the stocker will be marginal. This is also known as the "BSEL" Pad mod, a quick google search and I found this link, but I orignally saw it at XtremeSys.org forums, and it has been posted all over the net, there may be one more specific for your 2140 Need Confirmation on BSEL pad mod for e4300 - Overclockers Forums BTW, I recently picked up a 2160, and I use it every day at just under 3.3GHZ with a good aftermarket cooler. I have ran a few bencharks as high as 3.5ghz though... ![]() | ||
