Default What to do about high temp problem

I have managed to get my e6400 on a Evga 680i up to 3.0 ghz stable ( according to OCCT 2.0.0). Temps max at 58c at that setting. Tried to go a little higher (3.2) and the temps shot up from 32c at idle to 70c at 99.6% load.and OCCT shut down. I have reset the HS and cleaned off and applied new TIM. Using a TT Ultima 90 w/ a single 92mm fan blowing through the HS set at 100%.

The load temp is what is really concerning me. That is a pretty large gap from idle to load. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Vcore@ 3ghz is 1.3 and to get to 3.2 I have to bump voltage to 1.43.

That is pretty poor....using a Tuniq Tower, my quad @ 3.5ghz, 1.5vCore would do 70c. I had an E6300 last year, I think it only did about 55c @ 3.3ghz.

If OCCT crashed, obviously your OC is not stable. I doubt its heat because Conroes can take 70c, although not a lot more. Have you upped your other voltages? Also bear in mind that the newer E63/64s use crappy silicon, because Intel started using the better stuff for their quads. How old is your chip?

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with a Silverstone FM121 120mm fan.

Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme CPU Heatsink - (Socket 775 / AM2) - FrozenCPU.com

Newegg.com - SILVERSTONE FM121 120mm Case Fan - Case Fans

And your thermal paste can make an effect also. There are alot of options nowadays on thermal paste. I just did a thermal paste review at another site using 7 different pastes if you care to read it.

It is heat related. I set OCCT to shut down @ 70. When it stopped it said CPU too hot.

Not sure of the age of the chip. It came out of Dell xps 410 built 2/07
