Default Quad Core q6600 overclock questions

I brought a Quad core q6600 just recently and read up about what it is overclockable to and on average ppl say you can get it to 3.0ghz but i can only manage 2.74ghz. i recently found that ram is maybe my issue but may be wrong. What ram do ppl recommend. for 800mhz up ddr2, @ current i am running ocz 800mhz Platinum Edition its @4 4 4 15.
i can on get the fsb up to 1220mhz with a x9 and 1.40 vcore then i lose it and change the multiplier, i tried relaxing the timing for the ram but can't go below 55515 for some reason is there any advise on this
My mother board it s Asus p5n-e sli, is able to reach fsb speeds of 3000mhz , change the from 6 -50 and well everything and also graphics is leadtek 512mb gt8600.

First, It's very hard to read your choice of font...

What kinda temps to you get?
I'm folding on my Q6600, running 3.3Ghz on air... at full load my temps are around 55C and in idle around 24C...

Edit: You say you try to loosen your timings, but can't get lower than 5-5-5-15...
Well you should go higher in the numbers ... not lower that would be tighter timings.

On MSI P6N boards, which use the same Nvidia 6xx series chipest as your Asus, the FSB VTT setting would need to be pumped up to maintain stability.

Some people who got 3.0GHz with the Q6600 had to set FSB VTT to 20%.

Some people who dealt with Core 2 Duos prior to Core 2 Quads would forget this setting because it wasn't needed for the most part.

Make sure you've overvolted your Northbridge and FSB. Also, stick your CPU voltage to 1.5v, and make sure the vDroop fix setting is enabled (if there is one). Run the slackest timings on your memory you can, say 6-6-6-18, for overclocking, and then when you get the CPU speed right you can deal with the RAM. Make sure your ram is getting the correct voltage - maybe bump it up a little.

A helpful article, but bear in mind that they are using an ES B3-stepping CPU.

ok i now got up to 2.81 ghz @ vcore 1.5. nb @ 1.5v and ram @ 55515 @ 2.2v for some reason if i drop ram timmings below 55515. eg 66618 then comp don't boot ain ideas???

I reason also to belive that the temps are out of hand now its a 50c @ idle . i running a Artic colling freezer 7 pro as my cpu fan and have 2 case fans case temp is 35c Plenty of air around the case.

Should be able to reach that speed on lower voltage...
I'm at 3.4Ghz @ 1.41 vcore with a zalman 9700

Sure your heatsink is seated good?

i am still un able to reach the 3.0ghz mark the best i can get at the moment is 2.84ghz with vcore @ 1.46 and north bridge at 1.3v. Also after reading bit-tech.net guide i have found i can't modify some of the setting they do. and my board only has th 650i chipset not the 680i

You are right - there are very few overclocking settings on that board. Being entirely frank, that motherboard is good for budget overclocking but not very suitable for clocking quads. Nvidia's motherboard architecture is pretty poor in comparison with Intel's, and the fact that you only have nForce 650 probably makes it worse.

Whack the northbridge voltage up to at least 1.55v. I used to have the P5N-E and I had to use that setting just to rock my E6300 at 3.3ghz. If this works, you should get some uprated cooling for the northbridge as it gets hot as f*ck and will hamper the stability of your overclock. Other than that, I just bumped the CPU vCore a little - but that's just about all you can do with that board. Which was why when I got the Q6600, I decided to buy a new board as well, because I didn't think the P5N-E would do very well.

Updating the bios could help a little though - what version have you got?

I think this is a perfect example of why some mobos cost more..........more options & tweak-abilty. So when purchasing a mobo, you MUST take that into consideration otherwise......you'll be starting threads like this........

Don't bother upgrading to an 8800GTX as it will only give a minimal performance improvement over what you already have.

As for a motherboard, the P5N32-E has poor compatibility with the Q6600. P35/X38 boards are more modern and better overclockers than anything from Nvidia. How about one of these? I'm pretty pleased with my DS4.

You can only use SLi with an Nvidia motherboard. However, a single card is more than adequate for most users. As far as CrossFire is concerned, it is actually better than SLi because it works in more games and generally provides more of a performance improvement.

HaHaHa.You don't actually believe that do you.

This is the best 680i mobo for a quad core cpu.
