Default My Q6600 OC Thread (questions)

hey guys, I know this question could of been asked in the hardware advice corner but I figure since It is more targeted towards and OC audience; I would ask you some questions.

I just recently purchased a Q6600 G0 Slacr processor and some other hardware listed below and im looking for a good heatsink right now that would be tailored for OCing my cpu.

Here is the specs of the computer:

ASUS P5E LGA 775 Intel X38 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80562Q6600
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
EVGA 512-P3-N802-A1 GeForce 8800GT SC 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 HDCP
Thermaltake Purepower W0100RU ATX 12V 2.0 500W
Black Antec P180B Case

As many suggestions as possible would be nice as im currently on a $100 budget for both the heatsink and keyboard. Oh and suggestions for the keyboard are also welcomed.

I think you should get a Saitek Eclipse they run about 40 in most places and I had one and I loved it and I'm about to buy another one.
But the cooling is up to you or the experts im not so sure about that area.

Just as "oops too late" thoughts:

I don't recall Thermaltake PSUs being the most respected in the business.

Does the X38 really deliver much over less-expensive P35 boards?

For keyboards, there is only one answer. IBM Model M. Find one used for ten bucks.

actually from what ive heard around that psu is actually quite good. as for the ibm?

I got the x38 for future proof, pci express 2.0 and good ddr2 support and over all seems like a really good board.

as for the IBM M... I cant stand a keyboard that doesnt have a windows key... it really pisses me off...

Your board doesn't support DDR3.

For a Heatsink, The Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme is the best on the market.

That or a Tuniq Tower. With a Q6600, you gotta go big or go home.

I've got a 120 extreme on my e6750... it blows everything I've ever used out of the water. And while I've never used a tuniq tower, all the comparisons between the two show the 120 extreme as the better of the two.
Even at 1.5vCore my load temps are constant at 54c and 55c for the two cores. If you're going big (quad core) you'd best go big with the cooling too.

just had to post about your sig.

that pic was taken outside of out TOC at camp Adder ( Tallil AFB ) in Iraq. that vehicle on the left, called a ASV was actually a vehicle in my CEST ( Convoy Escort security team). i dont remember if that vehicle was the one my friend died in or not, but it got totaled when we were towing 2 ASVs and they hit a patch of bad road and both of the ASVs rolled over. minor injuries to most except for my friend who was the gunner in the ASV.

I'm real sorry to hear about your friend man. I've been lucky, all of my buddies have made it back, even the one who's a marine. If that sig bugs ya just let me know, I'll change it out. I just love that picture. Nothing like giving a big middle finger to insulting politicians.

What About the heatsink that will provide the absolute lowest CPU temps without watercooling. I have the same processor and I dont care how loud the cpu cooler is or how big or even how many fans it has. Any ideas?

Thermalright IFX-14 if it will fit your board. If not the Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120. Beyond that you'd have to use a TEC cooler to get better temps.

Well I have an Asus Striker Extreme Motherboard with 4gb of Corsair XM2 Memory and an BFG 8800GTS Video Card. I don't know if that will give you an Idea of how much space I have to work with. I just don't want to order it online only to find out it will not fit. Then have to go through the hassle of returning it. I think if I move the video card down to the second PCIE slot it will give me some more room to work with. But I do have the included Asus Extreme FX Sound card installed. But i can install a Sound Blaster Audigy card I have in another computer. So any thoughts?

Even though my oc is modest....2.4 to 3.2, I'm getting decent temps with the Artic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro. My temps using Everest CPU burn in are between 56c-58c.

After I dusted out my Tuniq Tower I get load temps of 67c @ 1.49vCore. Measure temps using CoreTemp. Don't underestimate the importance of a clean rig - that's like 8c cooler than when it was choked up with dust.
