Default Intel E6850 Overclocking/new system

Well I finally bit the bullet and jumped in with the Intel crowd (god help me lol)

So this is what I got,

Intel C2D E6850 3.00GHz CPU
eVGA 680i mobo (version a)
2GB OCZ Reaper 800MHz DDR2
and to top it all of a nice juicy BFG 8800 Ultra

I will be picking up 2 73GB 15,000RPM SCSI drives and a RAID controller from my friend tonight...

She is being cooled with my Swiftech Apogee GT and there new Stealth GPU block...

So far I have gotten to 3.75GHz stable on the CPU and 685 core/1150 mem stable on the gpu..

Last night I tried to push the CPU farther with out any luck....I gave her up to 1.6 volts and she would not budge past 3.75. I know it can do better, I have seen them hit 4.00 with 1.6 volts..I am thinking it is the north/south bridge cooler. I have been looking around and have seen other people say the thermal compound/cooler is not installed very well causing heat issues. Both hover around 40-45c with the FSB running that high 1660 or something like that. I do have the swiftech chip set block but because the board uses a heat pipe for both I am going to wait till I get another so i can cool both....

But for not any one have any ideas to get her to 4GHz?

Other than that the system kicks ass so far...I am getting between 70-100 FPS constant in Bioshock

Top score in 3DMark 06 so far is 13880...I will have to post some scores over in the benchmarking section when I get home, prob post some pics as well.

Very Nice system.
Have you bumped up the any other volts in beside Vcore? that could be whats holding you or it could be a FSB wall.

Not yet that was going to be my next step. If that does not work I will just wait till I can get another chipset water block. Hell I guess 100+ FPS in Bioshock aint to bad

Cool the board off a bit, a few deltas and a scythe Mine did it on a striker, that board has a almost equal reputation.

I would suggest getting a few fans directed towards the board, seems the newer boards are getting a little hotter than average, especially those MOSFETs.

Otherwise, what kinda cash did you shell out for that system. Them Ultra's aren't necessarily cheap.

Thanks, I will try that. I can always get the side panel for the Kandalf that has that huge fan installed on it.....I know the way I have the fans set up the air flow is not perfect..I hope to get a new case soon so I might just wait till I can do that to push the system more.

I got that mobo, cpu, memory, and card for 1,200 after rebates

Well i cant get mine running higher than 3.6 at the mo, it sat stable at 3.6 for 12+ hours on OCCT last night so it should be ok, ill give a go at overclocking it again at some point and let you know what happens

Yah that is about where I am now....

I had to back it down to 3.5 due to heat.....I think I need to redo my watercooling loop.....My raid is using real low CFM fans and I think that is holding me back.....

I will be getting a new case and a new rad soon so I hope to be back up to around 3.75 stable soon

But I did get my 8800 Ultra to 700 core and 1200 memory last night and she was stable

Remember the 680i has a terrible vdroop. I've pumped 1.75v through my E6600 (1.7v after droop @ full-load) in attempts to get past 3.95ghz. I'm on a good water set up, but still, if the 6850 is anything like the 6600 then you should be able to push 1.7v through the sucka for some benching without frying it. I've honestly never heard of anyone frying one of these chips with a one time bump to high voltage for benching.

In fact I've had 1.7v through it many times, not just on occasion.

Ya know now that you say that I remember seeing that in reviews that the 680i does that....When I was adjusting the vcore I had to use almost 1.5 in the bios just to have it show up 1.45. So I am getting about a .05 diff from the setting to the actual. Thanks for the advice! When I get my new case/watercooling loop all set up I will push her a little more

I am doing a review right now (ultra x3 600 watt psu) so I will mess with it more laters.

Yup. I remember when I first got my board, after doing some research here and there everyone was saying "You should be able to push 3.4ghz @ 1.4v" and it took me 1.45v. Pretty much everyone with an E6600 can hit 3.2ghz @ 1.35v. Took me 1.4v (1.35 after droop), so you see it all works out.

If you set the voltage in the bios, then look at what it shows up as in the bios in the actual reading, you'll see what sort of a vdroop you're getting. Also, if you have speedfan, check the voltage on that. It'll show up 0.3-0.5v under whatever you set it to, then under full-load it'll drop a little more.

Don't get carried away and apply the vdroop excuse overly and pump too much through it. Every chip has it's max OC wall, learn to tell what yours is by noticing the point you reach whereby over-volting 0.5v won't get you 100mhz more for example.

Also, upping your board voltages may help. Mine wouldn't do 3.6ghz @ 1600FSB until I put the SPP to 1.35v. Also 1.3v FSB will help you out a little.

And no matter what, don't pass 1.5-1.55v for 24/7.
