Default It's all down to luck...

It's amazing how vast a difference luck can have on your overclocking. I have an E6600 on an EVGA 680i with a Scythe Ninja. At 3.2ghz it idles at 35c and full-load is 58c. If I put it to 3.6ghz it needs 1.625v and idles at 51c with a full-load of 70c. I've tried remounting, changing back to the stock cooler, no luck, the CPU just kicks out heat. I've got it stable at 3.75ghz but it's just so hot it's unsafe, hence I have water cooling on the way.

Now I just built a PC for my friend today. Similar spec with an E6600 as well, but on an EVGA 650i board. Amazingly, with the stock Intel cooler, it does 3.6ghz @ 1.6v and idles at 30c!. Full load it doesn't pass 60c!. ON A STOCK INTEL COOLER! It's ridiculous!!! The cooler fins are completely cool to the touch when idling, whilst on my E6600 with a Scythe Ninja they're warm.

If I put his to stock 2.4ghz with 1.35v it idles at 19c and full-load doesn't pass 40c. I started updating the BIOS and drivers as I was sure it was reading wrong. Tried Core Temp, IntelTAT, nvmonitor, Speed Fan... all the same results.

I built the same computer a week ago with different RAM and a better case for another guy, and it idled at 38c/55c full-load stock similarly to mine.

This one is just stupidly good. With water it'd break records. I'm more than a little jealous of him, and tempted to swap the CPUs over >.>

Just a thought, the IHS on your chip may not be completely flat and thus not making full contact with the cooling device. But yeah, luck.

Nah checked that when I got the chip. It's just good luck I guess. I've tested it every way I know how, it's just stupidly fast.

I've think I've posted this before. I bought a Scythe Ninja and I used it for a week or 2,
I think I sent it to Sn0wMan. It's an early Scythe design meant for Silent cooling and it
worked well for the 1st dual Core CPU's. But the fins are spaced to far apart for effective
cooling even with the highest cfm fan you can buy. I liked Scythe so the next Heatsink I
bought was the Scythe "Mine". It was a big improvement, I had a X2 4800 at the time.
I can only say you need another upgrade :-)

I changed back from the Scythe to the stock Intel cooler. As I say, the new CPU I got him does 3.6ghz with the stock cooler easily. I put mine back to the stock cooler and it shot up to 45c idle >.> I mounted the Scythe on his and it started idling at 25c 3.4ghz.

I'm going to swap them both about when my water cooling ish gets here on the weekend and test some more.

That's true u did send it to me I also am running both the scythe mine and the ninja. The mine definitely pulls the temps down better. I will never be convinced that a watercooling setup is worth the maintenance.

What board are you on? I could give you step-by-step walkthrough on MSN or something.

You should be able to take it to 3.0-3.2ghz without any voltage increase. They're so easy to OC.

Well, there are also two versions of the E6600...

Intel® Core™2 Duo Desktop Processor E6600 - SL9ZL

Intel® Core™2 Duo Desktop Processor E6600 - SL9S8

If you look at the voltages, the later version's core voltage is 850V-1.3525V, where as the formers is 1.187V-1.325V... That could be the difference right there.
