Default p5ks vdroop and potential fixes and OC goodness

so there's lots of hype about the new p35 boards right now. I did my homework and I decided that despite its much lower price tag, the asus p5k vanilla was a solid choice for the time being. The only potential flaw that I could find was that it had a significant vdroop while the p5k dlx does not. I know a few of you made the same decision, so I figured I would share my findings. Apparently, from what I can find, the vanilla p5k does not have the 8-phase power array featured on the deluxe version (i believe it has a 6-phase? I'll confirm when mine arrives). According to some sources, you can use an old fashioned pencil mod to fix this problem. I've included the pic below (credit to xtremesystems). I'll be trying mine out as soon as it arrives and I'll post some results. And yes, the vanilla is able to break 520fsb for all of you who were wondering.

For those of you who did purchase the deluxe edition, asus has implemented an interesting feature in the bios called "cpu voltage damper" which virtually eliminates any fluctuation in the vcore. This bios option is included in the p5k vanilla, but doesnt appear to be working currently (maybe with a new bios?).

This thing is like the Mick Jagger of motherboards...its fugly....but I cant NOT like it.

if anybody cares, the gigabyte boards may actually have a 12-phase power setup...

Hmm I really want to push this thing as far as I can right out of the box, anybody know of a chipset waterblock that will fit this thing?

Good luck with the overclocking... vDroop mods don't really make too big a difference unless your really going for it IMO (unless there's really bad vdroop on your board, which some ASUS's suffer from).

at the moment its an e6600 and corsair ddr2 800 4-4-4-12 and my old x1950xtx. I just got home from work and now I'm going to start installing it. I just watercooled this rig a few weeks ago, unfortunately I only have a small radiator at the moment, bigger one should be in next week. I took the time to lap the processor the other day out of boredom. I'll be up late into the night I'm sure, but atleast this will keep me entertained for a few days.

BTW, it blows my mind as to why they would put the IDE port on the bottom left of the motherboard! I know its a dead technology, but I dont have a sata disc drive with me right now. I need a massive ribbon cable just to reach my drive bay from that position, and forget about cable management when that thing has to stretch all the way across the motherboard.

the northbridge gets hot enough that I could literally fry an egg on it. I'm going to find a better cooling solution before I can get it to go much farther.

some guy over on xtremsystems just broke 600fsb...

Anyways this is my first try at it. I'll be putting the multiplier back at 9 once I get my new radiator in, its just too damn hot as it is currently. My 6600's max fsb is higher than 500 but my ram doesnt want to go any farther atm. I just wanted to see that the board was capable of 500. Looks like its time to order some new ram!
