Default WTF have i done?

Hi guys,

Whilst i am a long time PC enthusiast, i never dabbled into OC'ing or UC'ing.

But since i have hand my HTPC rig for 3 years, i thought i'd give it a go, especially since the Asus P4P800 e-deluxe mobo makes it pretty easy to OC or even UC (for quietness)

Anyway, i found that i could OC to approx +30% (229.99x15) but it was a tad unstable, so i tried to increase the voltage to help stability (only to 1.60V) but it didnt seem to improve things.

So i manually set it to 225x15 and it seemed ok. (no rebooting on its own) so then i went to try UC'ing and found it could drop to 1500Ghz (100x15). And whilst i was trying to set that as the quiet mode, it seems to lock up .

I found that it would hang if i did any large changes to the CPU speed. In most cases a soft reset would make the system come good and usually back to defualt 3.0Ghz.

However, the system will power on but not boot!
What have i screwed up??? And how do i fix it. (i dont have speakers connected so i cant tell if there is any post beeps or not at the moment!)

Thanks in advance for your help!

BTW here is the basic config
P4 3.0c Northwood (not Prescott)
Asus P4P800 E-deluxe mobo
1Gb Corsair TwinX PC3200C2
Superflower 550W psu w/ 14cm fan

Clearing the CMOS would probably sort your problem. If your overclock is too high, and this is what is causing failure to boot, wiping the CMOS data will return all motherboard settings to stock.

The beeps usually come from the tiny PC speaker inside your case or on your motherboard as well as your main speakers. Like reflux said, just do a CMOS reset and don;t go so far the next time. It is all about trial and error. Just take baby steps.

Yup, GK's right. My main PC is my first build, and the first time I'd overclocked a PC. First I had to learn the basics about FSBs and memory latencies, and then to learn the quirks specific to my motherboard (such as having to use the black DIMM sockets if I intend to overclock).

Trial and error is the name of the game; see how far you can take your components at a sensible voltage, and use Orthos or some other stress-testing program to make sure that OC is stable. Then you can reduce the voltage to the lowest amount possible, whilst remaining stable, in order to reduce wear on your parts and reduce heat output. And remember where that CMOS jumper is. Good luck!

The P4C800-E will actually tell you in voice what is wrong via the speakers. (Always thought that was a neat feature, albeit sometimes annoying).

Anyways, reseting the CMOS should do the trick, as said above.

EDIT: Oops just noticed he has the P4P800-E, not sure if that has the voice post option. My P4P800 doesn't....

I plugged in the speakers, but still no posts.

Also, i cant soft reset anymore. I have to power off at the PSU or powerpoint.

Im looking for the Bios recovery disc atm.

PS. it does do voice but as the cpu wont even boot (no cpu led activity, just power LED) i dont even think its getting to the Bios stage.

BIOS recovery disk? Why?

To reset the CMOS, pull the jumper off the board for the CMOS (It will show which jumper in the manual), or just pull the CR2032 battery from your board and leave it out for a few minutes, and pop it back in.

Yeah, pull the battery and make sure the power is unplugged. Let it sit that way for a few minutes then try to boot.

I made sure the psu was off, and i pulled out the CR2032 for 10 mins.
The reboot looked promising as the CPU led was active for a few seconds, then i get the message that the signal is unsupported. (output is to a 60: Sony SXRD via DVI)

Would the jumper switch make any difference?

doesn't the cmos jumper just discharge the left over power from that bat so that it no longer helps contain the saved bios information? (i never really knew that is just what i guessed)

Yes, some mobo's will not do anything with the jumper missing or in the clear position.

I havent located my mobo disc yet, and so i'd thought i would just power it up and see what its going to do and it started working again!

I did get the error message below:

__________________________________________________ _________________________
Could not load file or assembly 'MOM.Implementation, Version=2.0.2589.34834, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=90ba9c70f846762e' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Hooray! I did some Mpeg2 recordings then ran some Windows updates and it ran for a day. I then rebooted and now my monitor gives the message that the PC is giving an unsupported signal.

WTF have i done again!

Will it boot into safe mode or are you getting the signal error immediately?
The refresh rate maybe set to high for the resolution your running. Remove
the video driver in safe mode, reboot and reinstall. If not then it sounds like
the mobo has just up and died on you.

Have you tried reseating and replacing other components such as the video card? If you have spare parts, go for it. I have the Asus P4C800-E Deluxe, and I got those voice errors about my CPU... and $120 on a new processor later it turned out to be the video card.

Im hoping that it is only the video card trying to display an unusual refresh rate, since the monitor (sony 60" SXRD) can display 1080p but i guess i should connect a normal 17" LCD and see if i can get it to revert back!

I dont know why it started working again then buggered up again after a reboot!
