Default Core 2 runs VERY hot! What's the deal?!

I built my system with an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro, and was getting load temps of around 75c when overclocked and overvolted. I was unhappy with this, so I bought a Noctua NH-U9F to replace it, in the hope of achieving temperatures similar to Dex (who has an E4300, the same mobo, and the Noctua cooler).

However, CoreTemp still reports ridiculously high temperatures - @ 3.2ghz after an hour in Orthos, it reads 86c!!!! CoreTemp tells me that the 'tjunction' is @ 85c, (I presume this is the temperature where the CPU throttles or shuts down to prevent damage?) but it's still perfectly stable at this temperature.

I tried using Speedfan, and that gives me a temperature reading of ~10c lower than CoreTemp, but compared to Dex's load temps of only 52c @ 3+ghz, it's still ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure the cooler is seated correctly and I applied AS5 properly. Touch the cooler during an Orthos session, and it's definitely no warmer than 30 or 40c. Case exhaust is only about 30c.

Are my temperature sensors malfunctioning or something? The airflow in my case might be a bit crappy, but I still only gain 10c by leaving the side panel off. Any help appreciated!

Ok im sure you know how to apply AS5 but maybe try doing this again, Put the thinnest layer on as possible. LIke paper thin! And reseat it, If that dont work i would try using a diff way to read the temps, Software temp reading programs suck! Just use a temp probe its way better! Last thing is, Ive seen this happen where the Stock heatspreder didnt lay on the die right on the chip and by removing it dropped temps 15c!! Hope this is not your problem! Ive done this with my Opty 165 and seen only a few C drops in load temps!

Good luck bro...

Intel solders them on, I won't try to remove it. It one of the easiest ways to kill a great CPU.

Try lapping it.

Well the thing is, I've already applied AS5 to this CPU 3 times. The layer has been as thin as I can make it, without scraping too much off. I'm thinking there must be an anomaly with my motherboard temperature sensors? I ran Orthos earlier @ 3.2ghz, and CoreTemp was telling me the CPU was at 121c!!!

Yeah, a temperature probe is a good idea. I was going to get one and shove it in a drive bay, thanks for reminding me. Cheers guys.

I haven't seen to many temp's reported accurately. Intel may have the sensor built in,
but it's still going thru other circuits to get to the bios. I've got a UEi DT200 Digital
Thermometer hooked to my cpu. The Bios says 47C, Core temp says 74C and my
Digital says 36.9C. I'm going with the Digital Thermometer.

Heh yeah, glad to know I'm not the only one with wildly exaggerated temps. I was pretty worried that I was going to burn out my CPU with the temperatures I've been seeing, but I guess if it's Orthos stable, it ain't overheating.

Reflux dont listen to what MattsPC said about the IHS not making good contact with the core. If anyting the IHS is convex or concave. Lapping the heatspreader voids your warranty but will decrease temps. You could also RMA to intel ad hope you get a good chip back.

Killert the 775 IHS can be easily removed with about 75% sucess rate. However crackign your chip becomes super easy.

I would like to know whats wrong with what i said? Its happend alot before on amd chips! I never told him to try and remove it! Or lap it at that matter! I just told him that it could be possible for that to happan, ME ( Not knowing that it is soildered in place now with the new chips ) But like i said i dont see whats wrong here!
