| Hey pimps. Advice would as always be greatly appreciated on the following matter... Building a rig to use in the living room as a sort of media centre type arrangement. My aim is to make this rig as quiet as is humanly possible on a low budget (no watercooling, phase cooling or any of that) The CPU is prob going to be 1.7 Ghz Celeron so as far as i know its not gonna be chuckin out a lot of heat. 512Mb PC2100 (i know.... but its NOT for games!) GeForce 4 MX 440 (I KNOW!.... but its REALLY not for games! lol) SB Live! 5.1 This is what i was thinking... The blue is some custom ducting going either down OR to the front...probably with some kind of sound dampening at the open ends (think sponges or foam baffles...) Ducting goes over Northbridge, CPU and out the back. Red are possible fan points... my thought is two quiet 120mm fans at the most... The PSU has one 80mm which im either gonna swap for a low noise or get rid of and run the ducting out through PSU... Any thouhts on the fan placement, CPU cooler (passive or just 120mm on low?) ducting... ort just any thoughts at all would be appreciated Thanks Mark | ||

| For the best results, run the ducting from the front fan to the back, with as little bending as possible. To be honest, the Northbridge shouldn't need to be in the ducting, and will only be detrimental to the cooling of the CPU. Honestly, you shouldn't even NEED the ducting with a 1.7 Celeron, but hey if it's just for fun, you might as well. | ||

| Hiya Mark! I'm always on the lookout to help a fellow 'pimp, especially if he bears the same name I do... (albeit being spelled with a "c"...lol...)... Looking at your drawing & hardware I think you could successfully run this 'rig with only a 120mm exhaust fan.... An YS-Tech FD 121225LB (2F1) 120mm or Papst 4412 F/2GLL 120 mm should do the trick.... Fit it, decoupled, with rubber "gommits" & a "silicone frame".... to minimize turbulence, you'd want to have a,perfectly round, unobstructed, hole, with a "wire grill" fitted for protection.... As a heatsink I'd go for a Scythe NCU 2500. That's a BIG sink which should have no problems cooling your cpu passively... In my humble opinion, there is no need for any "ducting" in your setup... & take care when replacing the PSU fan... capacitators can cause a lot of hurt! TDR | ||

hehe... i like that! Im sure there's a Pimprig quotes thread somewhere and thats should be in there! Thanks for the advice guys... Ducting is going a bit overboard eh? Makes my job a whole lot easier! YAY! Liking the look of that heatsink aswell... No votes for a Zalman flower? Or how bout this? http://www.infotechshop.co.uk/produc...recnumber=5742 (good price aswell...) Thanks again! Mark | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
