Thermal Gel Thickness

ok im about to get a new heatsing and i was wondering how think to put on the thermal gel ive been puttin just a dot in the mittle of the core and wen heatsings sqeezes on it spreads it out is there a better/diffrnt method?

Put a dot of themal paste on the heatsink or core, doesnt matter, and spread out with a creditcard very very thinly, dont touch with your hands as fingerprints on the heatsink or CPU = bad thermal transfer.
