Default Cooling, or lack of it rather...

So due to a small mistake my Zalman copper cooler for my 6800GT stopped spinning just now. I was playing Call of Duty 2 and started getting bad artifacts. When I finally realised what was happening it had gone up from 65c to 143c.

But now that the fan spins, its working again. Between roasted memory and smelly fan-controllers im glad my VGA card had a guardian angel

I thought the gpu turned off/scaled back at 127 c ,If it went that high in temp I'd rma that back with ANY excuse I could think of. That card is probably dameged and may possibly take out your system when it goes.

If you have the stock cooler, put it back on and RMA it, sounds like it cooked

Wow! I think you should be very glad it still works! A friend of mine fried his 9800Pro because the
sink wasn't properly attached...

Thinking of it... what a huge difference in temperature that small fan on the Zahlman makes! I not have thought temperature would shoot up that much without it...

Anyway, your little accident has confirmed my choice for going with the Zahlman Slimline intake-fan
in the sidepanel of my current COD project... having such a fan blowing over your graphics card could
be a real life saver in an accident like this....

When my fan controller died I tore out some of the stuff in my computer and the cable to the VGA cooler had jumped out without me knowing it. Later when it had cooled down I resumed playing CoD2 and it seemed to work fine since I could play without error for more than 20 mins before I went to bed.

Maybe it wasnt that high though since someone said that software can be a bit off (in this case the software temp monitor in Nvidias own driver package, wich although have worked correctly before). But it was certainly hot enough to burn my finger on the heatsink.

All in all I think I got DAMN lucky this time. I'll report back if my card dies from any after effects, but as of now its working like a swiss clockwork.
