Question Fan wiring

OK.. so i've got a bunch of fans...and no fan controller. My question is, until I can afford a fan controller, can I wire two or three fans together?? Will this lessen the efficency of the fans by making them run slower, or is it ok to do this. If I can do this, should I wire them in series or parallel?? Thanks for any suggestions.

As long as you are running them directly from a 12V lead, you can wire them together either way. Do not wire fans together and attempt to run them off a mobo header.

Wire them in parallel and they will get the same voltage. DO not wire in series..they probably wont start...

Default Fan Controller

I purchased a fan controller from Radio Shack that works great for $3.50

I'm using with a 120x38mm Delta 130 CFM fan which was so noisy I had to back it off.

Part # 271-265 25-Ohm Rheostat

That resistor is only 3 watts. should be good for one fan. You have to match the wattage of the resistor to the wattage draw of the fans(s). you are controllong.

The wattage rating of a resistor has nothing to do with the wattage rating of the fan(s). It refers to to the power dissipated in the resistor.

When a 3 watt variable resistor tries to dissipate 5 watts ( ie when you turn down the speed on a 10 watt fan) the resistor will fry. Any resistor will be fine as long as you don't ask it to dissipate more watts (hence more heat) than it is rated for. They don't burn out on full speed, thay burn out when asked to add resisyance to the circut when you turn down the speed.
