It's all really a matter of opinion. I don't have an Athlon64 yet, I'm planning on getting an X2 series soon. I personally like Thermalright and will recommend an XP120.

It's big, but it's fairly lightweight at the same time. I'm getting a 800MHz oc out of a P4 2.4 with one and I'm sure I could go higher with better memory. If I had to get something else I would go with the ZALMAN CNPS7700-CU 120mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan

Try google, there are tons of reviews pitting the xp-120 against Zalman products.

Repeat after me, zalmanzalmanzalmanzalman .The cn 7700 copper cpu cooler is a top of the line product. Its really quiet and amazingly powerfull. Temps on an Amd64-3000@2251Mhz 29 - 38 c.

Here is one of the best reviews I've seen to date:
http://www.cooling-masters.com/articles-28-0.html
(You don't need to know french to read numbers, but if you need to try this: http://world.altavista.com/)

And some more:

http://www.systemcooling.com/thermal...xp-90c-05.html

"Best" will probably depend on fan selection, but the XP-90C, XP-120, and new Zalman should be at the top of your list without getting assininely large.
