Default Stupid question...

Which way should the air flow be going onto my CPU from the hsf? Pushing cool air onto the CPU or pulling heat from it?

Dan

Blowing air over your heatsink.

EDIT: Ohh, I didn't even look at your post count. WELCOME!! Hope you stay and have some fun.

Thanks for the welcome, folks. I've been reading though this forum for a couple weeks now and it's been a huge source of info for me.

Sooo... in regards to the fan question should it be...

a)

[airflow]
| Fan
| Heatsink
| CPU
v

or.....

b)

^
| Fan
| Heatsink
| CPU
[airflow]

edit: many thanks for the links, thrasher!

A.

The fan should blow downward onto the heatsink's "fins". This cools the heatsink that is absobing the heat from the CPU. Remeber to add a good thermal compound to the top of CPU/bottom of the heatsink to allow for better heat transfer to the heatsink.

ACTUALLY.....if you want the best performance, it should be:

Code:
<-------- HEATSINK <--------- F
<-------- CPU <--------- A
<-------- SOCKET <-------- N
it should be blowing across it if at all possible. Changes of direction isn't the greatest for cooling stuff. BUT....IF that isn't possible for whatever reason, then blowing downwards (i.e. a.)

Welcome to PimpRig.

You've managed to ask a question that will never have an answer other than you need to have a fan on the heatsink. Whether it blows on or away, the temperature difference is extremely minimal. I've gotten better temps pulling the air off of the heatsink with certain fans and I've gotten better temps with the fan blowing air onto the heatsink.

Short answer...try it both ways and use MBM5 to see what gives you the best temps. Some members will give you all kinds of reasons to have it one way or the other but there are so many factors involved that you just have to try your own independent test to get proper results.

well, as Rob said, there is no big difference between those two ways...

I also tried to lower the temperature in my case but everything I do give the almost same results...

right now I have one fan blowing directly in my cooler and temp is ok

The more directional flow (presuming the rest of your case follows the same) gets you more cooling power per unit of air that you're pushing through (lesser chance of warm air being recirculated).
