| When I first built my computer I wanted a good heatsink b/c i was goi9ng to OC a little but I didn't want a water cooling system, so basically I wanted a heatsink that worked really good. I got the Thermalright XP-120 and its done good but without a very fast and very loud fan it doesn't do a great job. I was wondering if I got a Zalman CNPS7700-Cu if I would get better cooling. Seeing how thw XP-120 is all aluminum and the Zalman is pure copper and I also heard that the built in fan on the Zalman was pretty good at keeping quiet. Anyone have any suggestion? Thanx for the help. | ||

| I'm currently running an XP120 with a 108ish CFM fan. In my experience, and from what i've read about that HS, it shines with a hefty amount of CFM applied to it. For me, the noise is acceptable. If you're really interested in cutting down the noise level, then i think that you're on base with the Zalman. HoJo did a review of the AlCu : http://reviews.pcapex.com/cooling/za...u_heatsink.php 9 pimp hats is nothing to sneeze at. | ||

Ok, update. What I really want is a really really good heatsink that doesn't have to have a fan that sounds like a jet taking off, it doesn't have to be any specific brand. Any suggestions. Thanx

| I got the 7700 zalman and im definately impressed. Ive owned the thermalright slk-900a and have heard that the xp-120 acts pretty much the same way. As in the more cfm you run on it the more it performs and starts to show its value. However with the zalman, i know its not pushin that much air. Its quiet as hell, but extremely hefty and its volume is a monster. BTW currently right now im running a 3500+ Venice core @ 29 C, and under load i run at about 34 C. Basically it comes down to whether you can stand alot of noise with a larger cfm fan, or youd prefer to have it quieter and you dont mind that most of your case will be the zalman.....trust me its f00ken huge. | ||

| I used to have a Thermaltake volcanoe 7 and it did the job but was so damn loud! I changed this to the full copper version of the Zalman (7000B) and what a difference. From a technical standpoint the temps are lower and it is quieter than the Thermaltake. Aesthetically speaking in my opinion this is one of the best looking HSF's out there. If you want a fanless option then you can buy the 6500B (this is alu/copper but there is an entirely copper model) this does come with a fan but doesn't necessarily need it. Just my thoughts. | ||

| I'm gonna say you need to just try a higher cfm fan on your XP120 1st. I have a XP120 with a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811999122 The fan is adjustable from 38 cfm to 94 cfm plus it's lighted blue (they have other colors). It's a "Great Setup". I don't see the Zalman quite staying up with it in the High end. I have a P4 2.4C running at 3.2 with not extra power applied with this setup. The temp never goes over 101dF at full load. I would clock it higher but I'd have to 1) buy faster Ram and 2) My VapoChill setup could lose alot of respectability. | ||

| Here's a review for the 7700 cu that i found: http://gruntville.com/reviews/heatsi...an_vf700-alcu/ of even more interest, the 7700 Cu was tested against an XP 120: http://gruntville.com/reviews/heatsi...alcu/page5.php ok, the XP 120 fan that was used in the above review is an enermax: at 1721 RPM it's pushing roughly 59 CFM at about 32 dBA. I'm assuming that this was done to try to keep the noise levels between the 2 HS in roughly the same ballpark (my figures are taken from enermax's website http://www.enermax.com.tw/products_p...&Gid=1&Gid2=22 ). My point is twofold (everyone put on your hard hats...i've been thinking, it's about to get dangerous )1) With higher CFM, i believe that the XP 120 would have had a better (although much noisier) showing. 2) If you want a HS that performs very well and has very little noise, Zalman is the manufacturer to look to, IMO. I honestly haven't seen anything to convince me that anyone does low noise air cooling better than Zalman. Does anybody know what HS $SOLID$ was using when he placed in the top ten on the ORB? This is the last edit...i promise: There are some folks around here that really like the Zalman (folks who's opinions i put a lot of stock in). All this talk of quiet has just pushed me over the edge. If i don't have to buy new RAM, i'll put aside some cash over the next month or 2 and pick up the 7700Cu. If/when i do, i'll compare the two and post. I think i've just turned the corner into old fartsville: it's too loud, i'm too old ![]() Last edited by droeblek9; 04-August-05 at 12:00 AM.. | ||

I believe I used the 7000ALCU when I broke into the top ten the first time, a few tweeks and an upgrade to the 7700ALCU (Both were the aluminum/copper hybrid, not the full copper version!) got me into the 7th spot Just remember I had a 500CFM fan blowing 10F Winter air on it..you wont get monster OC numbers on air cooling with summer heat! BTW...the max speed I could bench the 4000+ Sledgehammer core was 2880MHZ with those super low winter temps, about the same as I can get from my new REV E 4000+ San Diego core with summer ambient temps of 70F ![]()

| I owned the XP120 and used a standard ~70 CFM fan on it and my temps really sucked. I threw a Sunon 90 CFM 3100 RPM on it that was a LOT louder and my temperatures still sucked. I was pulling high forties at idle. I removed and reinstalled several times with different types of TIM and allowed burn in time, but the temps never improved. I ended up swapping it with a guy for a used 7K. The temps were immediately back to sweet. I now run a 7700 on my main rig, a 7K on my testbench, and a 7K in my wife's rig. The nice temps and quiet operation is hard to beat. I know that eventually there will be another straight air heatsink that beats the Zalman in performance and quiet operation, but I haven't found it yet. Some people have the opinion that it's already out there, but I've used quite a few different heatsinks and my experience shows that it isn't. EDIT: His fan is nuts, and ORB means online results browser; usually related to Futuremark's benchmark programs. | ||

| You say his fan is crazy but what is it? Like an actual house fan or a specialty fan? Also, I was looking around and found >>>>this heatsink<<<<, anyone know about this b/c it is a large pure copper heatsink, and if someone does know about it, how would it compare to the 7700? Also, the only reason I use micro centers website is b/c thats the only pc store that sells "high end" pc stuff, b/c I dont feel like ordering stuff off the internet at the moment. Thanx Wow, I wish I could just rename the thread to Heatsinks in general, lol. Last edited by HebrewHammer; 05-August-05 at 01:54 AM.. | ||
