| I have the Gigabyte K8NS 939-Ultra board running a AMD64 3000+. The system runs great, but i don't know if i should be worried about the stock heatsink and fan or not...it seems that it likes to speed up and slow down (evem stopping sometimes) a lot...but, i'm not sure if its a power flow problem, or that its the Kool N' Quiet feature of the motherboard. But, since i havn't found anything, anywhere on how kool n' quiet works, i was just a little worried.... my computer runs great, so i don't "believe" i have anything to worry about, just posing a silly question. Thanks! Last edited by NCXCStud; 20-July-05 at 02:03 PM.. | ||

| Not a silly question. If memory serves me, the cool-n-quiet feature detects cpu activity, and when cpu activity is low (98-99% idle) it slows down the fan, on cpu intensive activities, it speeds back up. I didn't like giving up that kind of control, and disabled it. But no, your system is fine. In fact, if it didn't do that, that's when you need to worry. | ||

| alright, thats what i figured. It just freaked the hell out of me the first time i saw it, and i "flicked' the fan with my finger to get it back up and running again. That makes me feel good, and i will more than likely turn that feature off in the bios. I'm surprised Gigabyte didn't put in there in the manual with something like (the Kool n' Quiet feature makes your fan slow down, even stop, and speed back up. Don't worry, your new computer is not DOA....") Thanks a lot Graaile for your speedy answer I figured the system was running fine, the CPU only gets up to about 32-38C so, i figured i had nothign to worry about, but i had to ask regardless....the only stupid question is the question not asked ![]() | ||

| i also have the k8ns ultra 939, and in the bios under hardware monitor you can disable cpu fan control, so it will run continuously, also the stock fans on the amd coolers have a thermal control that speeds them up or slows them down according to temps. i replaced the fan with a higher cfm fan and my temps dropped by three degrees, so if you have an extra fan, i'd advise it. my temps (3200+ winchester)usually run about 27 degrees with cool n quiet enabled. if you want to enable c-n-q you have to change the power profile to minimal power management under power options, then set your monitor and hdd timeouts. just pm me if you have any ?'s. | ||

I second what Graille already said - not a silly question at all. If you want to ensure that your system's running and everything's working the way you expect them to, run F@H or something that pegs the processor constantly. That way, the HSF would have no reason to stop. ![]() | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
