Default General Problem

Okay I upgraded my mobo from the A7N8X-D v2 to the Abit NF7-S

I went and removed the HS and lapped it and re applied it with TC (Ceramique) and well temps shot up. I had the FSB at 440! and now its at 400 and at 63 at 2100mhz I tried the pressing gently on the HS trick no luck. Las of TC maybe? I havent tried to re mount it yet but any suggestions of what I might of done wrong.

by the way its an Alpha PAL 8045 I had the fan on before upside down pulling air away. I put on a 80MM UV green one pointing down this time. Could the fan direction affect it that much? Case is at 35. thought maybe because of what I heard the pressure of the fan blowing down on it would help.

Ideas?

I'd get yourself some Artic Silver 5 and only use a drop. I usually have the CPU out of the mobo when applying the tc and use a credit card to spead it thinly and evenly. If your not using a cooler on the northbridge chip, get one http://www.frozencpu.com/vid-20.html You might consider another HSF like this one

First, it might be the AS5 issue as described in a previous post, but what could also add to that problem is using a generic fan that is more flash than it is functional. Check the CFM of both fans and compare.

Some HSF's respond best when they draw, not push. Try going back to the old fan in the draw through mode.

Also, Abit temp readings are notoriuos for being off, does the Bios read the same as what the software does?

You might try to update the Bios using WinFlash (No floppies!) just make sure you get the right one for your revision board, there are many different ones.

Bios is at newest.

the fan is blowing down and at 31 cfm or something.
No idea what the other fan was at.

The BIOS temps = software.

I was also revferred that HSF before might grab it and som moore AS5. Will get back.

31 cfm. If your shooting for a quiet case then that should be fine with no overclock. If your shooting for High-Performance then you need more cfm's Try one of these.

I would go with the 2nd one as the fan has variable speeds.

I have an NF7-S v2 with an AMD 2500+ on it with the OEM HSF. The case, while modded, sits consistently at about 25 - 28f. The CPU always sat between 48 - 55c when at idle, 51 - 59c when gaming. I bought a Speeze HSF and AS5, but didn't like the fan so I replaced it with a Tt 75CFM fan. Now my temps are 36 - 41c at idle, and 40 - 49c when gaming. BIG DIFFERENCE.

The HSF makes all the difference.

I know a HSF can make you or break you. But its really the fan on it. The fan I had before was sme cheal LED fan with an unknown CFM so I figured it sucked. I might grab a mobile 2400+ when I grab the SI-97 and a tornado or something.

That Alpha is a middle of the pack cooler (according to this chart). So it's reasonably efficient if not the absolute best. If you wanted to keep it, you could always go the budget route: get a 80-to-92mm fan adapter and put a 92mm fan on there. That'd give you more airflow without more noise.

If you do get the SI-97 or similar, then you shouldn't need a Tornado to keep things cool. In this review of the similar XP-90, there was only a 1-3 degree difference between a 2800rpm Enermax fan and a 1800rpm Noiseblocker. (Your mileage will vary, of course.)

If you aren't experienced with lapping/don't do lapping often, it couldn't hurt to double check that in the process of smoothing out the heatsink bottom, it didn't develop any crowning. If you aren't using an index flat or a piece of glass already, there are kits out there that include an appropriately flat surface with the abrasive sheets.

Getting my new fans SOON. 4 days maybe.

I ordered off Xoxide for the Silent Cat 92mmfan with 80mm adaptor and Collermaster X-Heat terminator.

Yes I have checked.

It was set at 2v but then I swapped fans and backed it to 1.93 to get it stable at my lower OC.

Today my fans arrived. Tt Silentcat 92mm w/80mm adaptor. 52.20CFM 21dba
and Aerocool X-Flow 52.80CFm 48dba?

I wanted the fan on backwards again because my case temps shot up when I had it blowing down. So I applied my Arctic Silver5 the fan on backwards and started it up. Started it at 440 FSB 2V running right now 5 programs 55C case is 31C because power went out so AC went off.

Conclusion: Fan sucked. Pulling air from CPU on Alpha PAL is better because of the way it dissipates heat. It also cools the Chipset better.

Thanks for opinions.
