Default What would happen if I cut a thermal probe off?

What would happen if I cut a thermal probe off of a thermally controlled fan? Would it default to the lowest rpm setting all of the time or would it just be F'ed??

Depends on the design.

What about the fan I took off of my Thermaltake Volcano 7. It's a Thermaltake 80mm fan and it says TT-8025T on it.

depending on how the thermal sensor works, cutting it and leaving the wires (i'm assuming there are wires) apart would stop the fan all together, if you twisted them together it would run at full speed... or the other way around....

if u cut off that thermal diode from that fan, u would have to then connect the two wires together..or else the fan wont spin

and once u do that fan would run at full speed

u can also replace that t diode with a about 10k pot...to control fan speeed

Jameco part #140513.

Each one can control 5W worth of fans (1 x 120mm, or 2 x 80mm).

Edit - 10 kilo ohms is way more rtesistance than you need.

If you clip the wire to your fan monitoring for your heat-sink, your motherboard will complain unless it has an option in the BIOS to turn it off...

I run my TT Dragon Orb 478 through my Rheobus. I cut away the adjustable crap and ran the single monitoring wire to my mobo. It works fairly well.

ADD: What would happen if I cut a thermal probe off?

Answer: It'd probably hurt like crazy

I just supplied a picture and a link to a 100 ohm potentiometer 3 posts up.

It is a variable resistor .......... which means you can use it to vary the juice supplied to your fan ...... thus precisely contolleing fan speed.

Well, I know in my case, I wouldn't be able to tell how cold, or how deep the water is
