Question melting processor

My friend put his dell computer ( don't know model) into a new ninja case. The dell used a air duct to cool the cpu After putting his computer in the new case he decided he didn't want the air duct so he just left his processor alone without any direct cooling. he doesn't believe me that his processor will overheat or melt so can i get some feedback from some smarter people out there.

(i don't know anything about the case motherboard or cpu all i know is its dell and a pentium 4 thats all i know)

If you have a freind thats dumb enough to buy a dell to begin with...They maybe you should stop advising him and let him just burn it up...I mean if he won't take your advice go for the sweet " I TOLD YOU SO A$$HAT" when he melts it to blue hell and back....

Some peoples children......Jesus...

I believe dell's come with a heatsink on the processor but do not blow air directly onto the processor, and instead let the back exhaust fan pull heat off of it through the duct. Your friend is gonna end up destroying his sh!t if hes not careful.

I've seen what you're talking about. I don't know if the fan blows or sucks but either way it forces air to flow across the heatsink. If your friend is so convinced that he can run passive cooling, let him. Some people just need to learn the hard way.

Before the days of my enlightenment, I actually purchased two separate systems from (H)Dell...

Both had passive cooling on the CPU, simply a huge heatsink of some mystery material (Alum?). The first one's intake and one exhaust fans kept it from melting down (barely), but they were eak at best. The second (and last ever, I swear on all that is Holy) had an exhaust fan (88 or 92mm) with a shroud that covered that mystery metal and sucked/blew the heat out the back...

I'm with Digi... If he won't listen, quit trying to sell him on cooling... The blindest (sp?) man is the one who refuses to see. When it does melt down, he'll feel it in his pocket. You make sure he feels it upside his head for all of us, ok?

I ran a Dell 2400 on nothing but the stock heat sink for a few months in a non-dell case ,but its the case I am currently using with no dell parts and has quite a few fans. Never got close to overheating.
1X 120mm intake
1X 80 mm intake directly over the heatsink
2 80mm exhaust.
I think his computer might survive in the winter if its really cold in that particular room but I doubt it will in the summer unless you live in a semi-polar region.

PS: How in gods name did you put a sound file in your sig like that grandpanoob? That is l337

The fan sucks, this duct coolign has been used since I have seen inside a dell pc. (about 2000).

Without the air being pulled off it will burn and die. But its a POS dell with a stupid user, so who cares.

The sig sound file is truly awesome, the Creed Of The Infantry Soldier really hits a soft spot.

For anyone that wants it..

I am the Infantry.
I am my country's strength in war.
her deterrent in peace.
I am the heart of the fight-
wherever, whenever.
I carry America's faith and honor
against her enemies.
I am the Queen of Battle.

I am what my country expects me to be-
the best trained solider in the world.
In the race for victory
I am swift, determined, and courageous,
armed with a fierce will to win.

Never will I betray my country's trust.
always I fight on-
through the foe,
to the objective,
to triumph over all,
If necessary, I will fight to my death.

By my steadfast courage,
I have won 200 years of freedom.
I yield not to weakness,
to hunger,
to cowardice,
to fatigue,
to superior odds,
for I am mentally tough, physically strong,
and morally straight.

I forsake not-
my country,
my mission
my comrades,
my sacred duty.

I am relentless.
I am always there,
now and forever.
I AM THE INFANTRY!

How did I get the soundbite... I found the mp3 on a Columbus, GA/Ft Benning radio station website (along with the Ranger Creed as well ), downloaded it and kept it. Foe came along with her fancy-schmancy musical sigs, and the light went on . BTW: that's also the massive block of text etched into my case window... ITR, ring any bells?

I've personally tried a Dell processor and cooling system in a normal case (swopped the cpus to check if a motherboard was working). While the cooling solution fitted as good as a lorry tire would on a honda civic, the processor remained "warm" without it.

This is ofcourse Pentium 2/3 era. The slot 1 CPUs managed well with just their large passive heatsinks. If your friend has this age group of dell, then a nearby 80mm fan either on the rear of the case or on the bottom of the PSU (dual PSU fans/ one large 120mm) should do the job without ducting. Anything previous to the Pentium 2's had large passively cooled heatsinks anyway...one of which I have.

Pentium 4s are a different kettle of fish. You need active cooling full stop. The best thing to do would be to rig up at least one 80mm to the rear of the case, then get some sheet plastic (a biscuit box container would do the job), and cut a duct shape out, super glue the parts together, and support it on the rear of the case.

The thing Dell uses, to me, is kind of like a ducting kit, if you would call it that. I found a picture of what it typically looks like.

The second and third pictures might give a better idea of what Dell uses. Hope this can make things a bit clearer.
