Ok, another friend came to me in need of a new computer. Getting him a Abit NF7-S v2 with a Barty Mobile 2600+. Well which would be better for a mild OC of about 200Mhz.

noise level is a key point. the guy doesnt want a loud computer. in fact we will be sound deadening it.

thanks all.

You could mod a zalman 7000 and make it fit.

Or a 7700... Oh, wait, nevermind...

As far as sound dampening goes... I sent Spikeshot some foam sheets that I got for free at work to use as an experimental dampener material. I can round up some more and send it to you if you'd like to try it out. What I can do is ship it to you, let you try it, and if it works you just reimburse me the shipping... I had a thread about this stuff a little while back... Lemme find it, and/or LMK if you're interested.

EDIT: HERE is the link to the original thread, and I just need the area dimensions +20% so I can figure out how many sheets to send you. Oh, and an address would be nice, too, since the wife did Spring Cleaning and threw out the box the 7700 came in...

EDIT #2: If you want the thin sheets, I'll probably double the amount, so you can double the sheets up per area surface (since they are so thin...)

If you are getting an NF7-s rev. 2 and a 2600+ mobile.. why only shoot for a 200mhz OC? It should at least hit 2.4 easy.. with about 1.8 volts. It will still be cool enough to use a quiet fan.

And I wouldn't get thermaltake... too many better hsf manufacturers out there to spend money on IMO. You could get the thermalright heatpipe cooler and a nice quiet fan that would be a lot more efficient.

If he wants a quiet computer tell him to get a dell, if he wants an overclocked mobile athlon in a desktop computer, maybe a little sound isnt too bad?

Yeah. Well said.

I don't mind sound too much, my case has 8 fans, and gets great temps. 31c idle 34c load. But still.. go for a thermalright heatsink and a 90-92mm efficient fan.. and you should still get good OC's and keep it low on the db.

he wants a gaming computer, not a dell. little hint, dells are junk anywho. going with a mild OC at first. going to see what kind of temps i get with it. and then bump it up...

but if you guys got specifc links that would be best. this guy by all means couldnt tell a proc from a stick of RAM. but he is a gamer. how the two dont match is beyond me.

but yah, thanks again. ohh and BTW, i dont wanna mod anything, cuz a i dont feel like it, im way too busy lately. and b it would go to waste.

EDIT: on a side note. the NF7-S2G, sucks. another friend bought a different board than what i told him. and with his barty in it. it locks the multi at 6. total gheyness.updated bios. for some reason there is NOWHERE in bios to set multi. and if i go higher that 175fsb. the system will not post. so yah he is a dumbass.

Here's a list of the Best Socket A Heatsinks. The more efficient the heatsink, the less airflow is needed for good temps. The less airflow, the less noise.

I don't know how many on that list are still available. My recommendation would be to go with Thermalright or Swiftech -- ThermalTake really does have a long-standing reputation of making inefficient heatsinks.

The Thermalright XP-90 would be a good thirtysomething dollar choice. I'd recommend a good speed-adjustable 92mm fan (like Enermax's), so you can get the right balance of cooling/noise. I tried out a so-called "silent" fan on a lowly P3, and even that started to overheat after a couple minutes. So yeah, I like adjustable..

Locks the Multi at 6, there is something very wrong there and it's more then a sucky mobo.

A Multi of 6 at 200Mhz is only 1.2 Gig and I know damn well there isn't a barton made that runs that slow. Something is really really wrong and it isn't just a board that won't OC cause this isn't even running at default.

There has to be a BIOS setting or Mobo Jumper somewhere that has it screwed up. Or, something is damaged.

OK, hmm, you found this right ?

NOTE: We suggest you to install DDR SDRAM modules from DIMM3 to DIMM1 sockets in order.

Both the 20Pin and 4 Pin power connectors are used right ?

Turn off CPU Thermal Throttling or make sure it's set near the upper limits.

Lastly, check this page on the BIOS history.

There were several versions that have "fixed" or added changes for new CPUs, perhaps while fixing something in the latest version, they broke something else. You can play with older versions of the BIOS here : http://www.abit-usa.com/products/mb/...es=1&model=205

Single stick or PC3200 ram.

And yes, even though that wouldnt affect if i could see a multi setting in the BIOS anyways. Throttle off. I'll try older revisions.

Sounds cool, maybe you will hit something.

A question for the group, anyone remember something about a bridge-hack that makes an XP chip look like a Barton ?

And cool, so it's in Bank #3 then.

EDIT: And BTW, you are right, the dude bought esentially an Abit OEM version of a performance board, it's had it's ballz cut off.

An Abit Eunic

I would take the Overclockers.com heatsink rankings with a grain of salt... If you read the articles for those HSF's, the "best" ones use incredibly power, high dB fans for the posted C/W...
