Default World's fastest 80mm fan?

Knowing that my temps would go through the roof with the arrival of summer, I bought an 80mm fan to replace my pretty but feeble cfm blue LED CPU fan off eBay a while back.

Why this one? well, I was intrigued by the fact that this one appeared to be a pre-production sample - looks like I got something special: check out the rpm reading (under "chassis fan" - I hooked it up to the wrong header ) - 168,750rpm - no wonder the full load CPU temp dropped by 22C!

All right, I'll come clean - the usual rpm reading was around the 6,000rpm mark - this was just a glitch where the rpm readout would show up as something else, this was the highest reading I got

It's not the only fault either - there's so much interference on my TV I've already uninstalled it

getting any red glow on the blade tips per chance? Well would certainly be a good tool to block out anyone scanning your home for a WLAN hack.

i put a fan on a 35k dremel once... you know, just for fun. It had to have been like 500cfm.

Then I got my fingers in it, which didnt really hurt untill a half hour later when the numbness went away.

Have you heard what a Vantec Tornado sounds like? If you had a fan going that fast it probly would have broken up, just like how a cd breaks at high speeds. Interesting glitch.

Indeed I have herd a vantec tornado and a delta focused flow 120mm, they sound like vacume cleaners and ar audiable throughout the whole house... not suitable for everyday use only getting lower temps for overclocking. The plus point is with a 2500+ mobile the temps recorded on a Abit NF7-S were 23c with stock voltage at full load (ambiant 20)... I think we used a sp-97 for that

whew, tornados...thats part of the reason I am going H20 is to get that thing off my CPU...even at half voltage using my controller it's annoying....I just picked up some 60x25mm fans at like 45CFM each lol, they go at about 6800RPM and have a pretty high pitched whine, but my god for such small fans they pack a punch. Cost $5 for 10 of them over at svc.com because they are on clearance.

lol j-dogg,lilbowser and I will get togather and lan. We want to shoot j-dogg when he cranks up his tornado in his gateway mod to get that little extra overclock. especally when we want to game and watch a movie, or just hear to our selves game

has anybody ever tried stealing the fan off of the Thermaltake Silent Boost series and using it as a case fan?

I'm seriously considering using that for all of the processors and then using either that or the Vantec stealths for case fans.

*edit*

at 168,000+ rpm, that's faster than some of the gas turbines and turbochargers that I know of!!! weeeeee.......

There's no reason it shouldn't be possible (presuming you aren't the sort of person from whom anybody else would take away tools on sight for fear of catastrophic disaster) as the mounting points appear standard.

Well actually I have, I tried it in my p4 2.8 ghz rig about a year ago. I got the white ones that are supposed to be replacements for the slient CPU cooler they made about that time. They are quiet, very quiet, but 80mm is great for airflow if you want quiet i'd say stick with a modded case to get 120 exhaust or a stock case that has a 120 exhaust....on a side note they anoy me because you can only mount them as exhausts, or you could mount them on the front of your case from the outside but that is redundant.

Edit: The white plastic they were made out of deteriorated under UV light, when i took them out of the case they were stained brown (from being sunburned by the UV light) and were so brittle from the "cooking" that they could be broken apart by using just my fingers.

The comment regarding the UV almost begs the question of how long it would take to photodegrade any other plastics that haven't been UV-desensitized that may happen to be in the case.

more importantly....HOW the heck did you burn it with UV light??? Did you have a black light in your room/case or something? or was the computer under direct sunlight for an extended amount of time???

I mean...I know that the plastic probably wasn't UV treated...but it shouldn't HAVE TO BE! lol....*scratches my head*...completely baffled.

(I would also think that you can use it as an intake fan if you switched the live and ground wires (which if I recall correctly is +5V). <-- haven't looked at the electrical spec yet, but I mean, I would think that that SHOULD work.

particulate energy _(is proportional to)_(a specific constant for the uncoated fluorescent tube)/distance^2

Given that the lamp could literally have been mounted within just about 1cm of the fan, there'd be enough energy hitting the fan that if you had a magnifier, it'd be possible to do away with the microwave for your Pop Tarts.

(All this based on the presumption that the computer being bombarded/illluminated by UV had the high-energy photon radiation source inside and that the lamp was not--for whatever reason--mounted to the exterior.)

Sooner or later, I'm gonna have to write a book "10 Stupid Things That People Do To Their Computers"

#6 - Black light (ANYWHERE) in the room.

<--- *wonders how UV would affect EMI/EMR/EMF emissions and general overall functionality of a computer given that most of the PCBs are plastic. (excluding components, discrete or otherwise, by weight)

If you're going to have a black light, why not have an unshielded microwave source while you're at it? Or some other high energy source. And then, for kicks, replace all metal casings to magnesium casings.
